Susanna Ridler (born 1968 in Waldhausen im Strudengau ) is an Austrian vocalist and composer at the interface between jazz, electronics, improvised music, new music and literature.

Life

The Austrian composer, vocalist, performer and sound artist first studied acting and worked for a number of years in the theater (including at the Aktionstheater Ensemble ) before studying music and singing in Maastricht, Amsterdam & Los Angeles (Outstanding Student Award 1998, Musicians Institute , Hollywood ).

In 1998 Ridler founded the acapella trio "treasure" in Los Angeles, with which she realized her first compositions (2nd place in the Californian acapella competition "Harmony Sweepstakes"). After her return to Vienna in 2001, Ridler began to integrate the computer as an instrument into her musical work. She composed music for theater and radio plays (including for Ö1 , “Staatstheater Mainz”), produced a remix for Universal Music in 2003 for Gershwin'sSummertime ” and in 2004 started her electronic jazz pop project [koe: r].

In 2008 Ridler released the first sound carrier [koe: r] on her own label "Electroland Records Vienna", with Peter Herbert (double bass), Wolfgang Puschnig (saxophone / flute), Thomas Gansch (trumpet), Rainer Deixler (drums), Helmut Jasbar (Electric guitar). Your CD version of Jobim's " Corcovado " was re-released on the stereo deluxe compilation "Brazilution-Winter Edition".

In 2009 Ridler produced a remix EP with mixes by I-Wolf , Lowa (featuring Uwe Walkner), Brenda & Conny Dix.

In 2010 she cooperated as a singer and co-writer for the song "kiss her in the stomach" with Kava & Christopher Chaplin (album "Seven Echoes", Fabrique Records ).

In 2012 the second [koe: r] album "Susystems" followed with Peter Herbert (b), Florian Kmet (egit), Alexander Lackner (b), Gerald Preinfalk (bcl), Wolfgang Puschnig (sax). With this she achieved a modern art music that was highly praised by the media - Rolling Stone magazine says: "Susystems leads straight into the realm of strokes of genius". Austria concert tour a. a. to: “Grazjazznacht” in Graz, “Jazz & the City” in Salzburg, “Women in Jazz” in the Brucknerhaus Linz and “Jazz Art” in the Glass Hall (Wiener Musikverein).

In spring 2012, Ridler received a composition commission from the Outreach Festival on the subject of “Financial Crisis”, where the 30-minute work “no fear with angst” was premiered.

2014/15/16: In her commissioned work for the Carinthian Summer under the title "Geometry of the soul or I no longer see the lake", Ridler sets excerpts from Gert Jonke's works (including parts of the "Geometric Heimatromans") to music . The project was premiered in a trio with bassist Peter Herbert and saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig . The Gert Jonke Society then commissioned Ridler to provide music for the unveiling of the new gravestone at Gert Jonkes' grave of honor, as well as the awarding of the Gert Jonke Prize in the Klagenfurt City Theater in March 2015 - here with the premiere of the commissioned composition of the Jonke poem " here the map ”.

In 2015 Ridler started a mini-concert series called POCKET SESSION. A 30-minute solo or duo session, as a musical workshop in public space, where excerpts from current compositions are tried out and donations are collected for charitable purposes. The venue in 2015 was the upcycling design store "risen". The POCKET SESSION No. 4 took place for the first time in August 2016 in the Vienna Votive Church .

style

As a singer, composer and arranger, Susanna Ridler strives for a reconciliation between acoustic and electronic worlds: “This fusion should produce a coherent, special sound. I try to make every note consciously, which leads to a complex composing and arranging process. "

The band project [koe: r] is the result of a long search with the intention of combining tradition and modernity and thereby finding an individual approach to style. Ridler's concept of combining electronics, jazz, pop, rock and funk is implemented here. Live material recorded in the studio meets the possibilities offered by the computer - with all the methods such as sampling, alienation, time stretching, pitch bending, etc. You can also find songs like Summertime, Fever, Comes Love, Angels Eyes, You go to my Head and Corcovado undogmatically raised to a surprisingly new musical level - especially since the old songs on the one hand wear unusual style clothes and on the other hand experience an interpretation that borders on a new composition. "I try to bundle different stylistic and methodical traditions in which artificial sounds and the aura of improvising individualists are superimposed," says the musician.

Meanwhile Ridler writes works for classical chamber ensembles and tries to merge composition and improvisation in a meaningful way.
