BW

Naarn im machlande is at the Danube preferred market town in Upper Austria in the district Perg in Mühlviertel with 3708 inhabitants (January 1, 2020).

The municipality belongs to the judicial district of Perg and the competent district court is located in the district capital of Perg .

The place was first mentioned in documents in 823. The parish of Naarn, which in the 8th century was the only baptismal district of the Diocese of Passau in the Mühlviertel north of the Danube with Naarn as the baptismal church, is one of the three mother parishes of the lower Mühlviertel from which most of the parishes later became , along with Saxen and Ried in the Riedmark the districts of Perg , Freistadt and Urfahr-Umgebung were removed.

The current area of the municipality was expanded on January 1, 1938, by amalgamating the cadastral municipalities that had existed since 1784 and the independent political municipalities of Au , Baumgarten , Naarn im Machlande and Ruprechtshofen since 1849 . Naarn was elevated to a market town in 1979 by the Upper Austrian provincial government .

The location on the Danube and at the confluence of the Ennskanal and Aist was associated with frequent floods and multiple flood disasters , most recently the Danube flood in 2002 , which is why the Machland dam was built in 2010 .

Since the opening of the Perg bypass in 1999, Donau Straße has touched the municipality and the land there has since been used for the settlement of businesses.

For the tourism of the municipality are camping and boat -Port in Au on the Danube and the immediate location at the Danube Bike Path and the Donausteig important. There were pilgrimages to the pilgrimage church of Maria Laab until the current century .

geography

Location and surroundings, geology

Naarn im Machlande lies north of the Danube at 245  m above sea level. A. entirely in the Upper Austrian part of the Machland plain. From a geological and geomorphological point of view as well as aspects of the use of space, Naarn belongs exclusively to the Machland spatial unit and has no significant elevations. The difference in height within the municipality is only 9 meters. Mineral resources in the municipality are essentially crushed stone and gravel, which are also mined there in small quantities.

The extension is 9.1 km from north to south and 8.6 km from west to east. The total area is 35.1 square kilometers. 12.8 percent of the area is forested, 72.4 percent of the area is used for agriculture. The rest are bodies of water, public areas and built-up areas.

The capital Naarn is located around four kilometers southwest of the district town of Perg and around 30 kilometers east of the provincial capital Linz . The distance to the federal capital Vienna is around 190 kilometers. The next border crossing to the Czech Republic , Wullowitz in the municipality of Leopoldschlag, is 60 kilometers to the north.

Waters

Rivers, municipal boundaries, Danube bridges

The municipality is bounded by the Danube in the south and by the Aist in the west. The Aist-Mühlbach and a small piece of the Naarn to the east flow through the municipality .

The Danube forms the border with the Lower Austrian neighboring communities Sankt Pantaleon-Erla and Strengberg in the district of Amstetten in the Mostviertel . Other neighboring towns are the municipality of Perg in the north-east and the market towns of Schwertberg in the north, Mauthausen in the north-west and Mitterkirchen in Machland in the east.

The next Danube bridges are up the Danube in Mauthausen and down the Danube in Grein . Crossing the Danube at the Wallsee-Mitterkirchen Danube power plant is possible with restrictions.

Failure flood on the Aist and on the Naarn

On both the Naarn and the Aist in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the timber felled in the hinterland was brought to the Danube by means of the flood of failure and there initially assembled into rafts for further transport, later transported away by tugs or by rail . The main rake , the floodplain and the wood yard for the Aistschwemme were in Au.

Flow regulations

In 1927 the concrete bridge over the Aist was opened in Obersebern and in the same year the course of the Aist was changed together with the municipality of Haid near Mauthausen and the confluence with the Danube was relocated.

During the construction of the Wallsee-Mitterkirchen power plant , both the water networks of the Aist and Naarn and the water balance of the Au were regulated, with some new river beds being created and the estuaries being relocated to the Danube.

Danube regulation

Until the first half of the 19th century, the Danube had a largely natural course in the area of today's Naarn municipality, where sometimes a main stream in the lush alluvial forest was no longer recognizable due to the countless meanders, islands and gravel banks. Bank protection was carried out, for example, in 1773 in the area of the Au market. Below the Au market, the Danube made a sharp bend to the south in the direction of the Erlakloster, but it silted up more and more over time. When the water level was high, numerous side arms and ditches formed on the left bank. At that time it was possible to drive directly from the Danube to Staffling.

The Austrian regulation of the Danube , which began in 1822, led to breakthroughs below the Au market (1845/46) and 1852/54. After the Danube breakthrough in 1922, the Danube from Au to Wallsee received a straightened bed and a better current. Oxygen arms and side channels were preserved, but they became swampy so that they were no longer navigable. From this point on, a navigation channel facilitated navigation on the Danube. Since the power plant was built in the mid-1960s, the Danube has been in the area of the Naarn municipality in its dam area.

Flood protection

The Romans' records have already reported about the flood risk of the Danube in the area of today's municipality of Naarn, who gave up their position in Albing opposite the Aist estuary due to excessive flood risk and moved to the slightly higher camp Lauriacum. Further floods are documented again and again from the beginning of the written documents in the 9th century. Most recently, a flood disaster in 2002 threatened large parts of the Machland.

Construction lot 1 of the Machland dam, which was constructed from 2009 to 2013, extends over a length of around seven kilometers between Au and Ruprechtshofen and is intended to provide protection against a hundred-year flood for the villages of Au, Naarn, Strass, Staffling and Ruprechtshofen.

The 8.7-kilometer-long flood basin (Lot 8), which is also part of the Machland dam, also begins in Au, leaves the municipal area after about 7 kilometers in Ruprechtshofen, flows into the Hüttinger Altarm in Mitterkirchen im Machland and, together with it, mimics a tributary of the Danube a total length of 14.3 kilometers. This is intended to improve the situation in the event of minor floods and ensure the ecological functionality of the tributary system.

Structure of the community

The market municipality of Naarn consists of four cadastral municipalities (number of inhabitants in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

Primeval times and antiquity

The presence of people in the Neolithic Age is proven by various accidental finds of stone axes and their fragments from the period between 4500 and 1800 BC in the municipality of Naarn (examples are rubbing stones, perforated axes, knocking stones, etc.). Accidental finds from the Bronze Age between 1800 and 800 BC, on the one hand bronze tools and bronze jewelry and on the other hand urn fields, complement the evidence from antiquity. In contrast to the excavations in Perg and Mitterkirchen im Machland, systematic excavations have not yet been carried out in Naarn.

During Roman times , today's Naarner municipality was located north of the border of the province of Noricum on the Limes of the Roman Empire - which was then formed in this area by the Danube - within a 7.5 km wide buffer zone between Romans and barbarians . The Roman fort Adiuvense ( Wallsee ), as well as the two legionary camps Albing and Lauriacum ( Enns / Lorch ) were within sight. Traces of settlement from this time are not detectable in Naarn, as the mentioned buffer zone had to be cleared by the Germans who settled there and was no man's land. Recently, three temporary marching camps have been located in the Obersebern district.

middle Ages

Harter Schlössel (copper engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674)

After the Migration Period, Baiern and Slavs (Winden) settled in the Naarn area at the same time . Both peoples left traces in the names of places and houses. The place names Starzing, Tabor, Straß, Pratztrum, Koth and Sebern can be cited as examples of Windisch names for Naarn. The Bavarian place names in Naarn are, for example, Au, Winkl, Brand, Oberwagram, Dirnwagram, Hart, Bach, Staffling, Baumgarten, Wimm, Hainbuch, Neuhof, Holzleiten, Ruprechtshofen and Schönau.

Due to the type of settlement, Niedersebern and Pratztrum are to be regarded as old Slavic settlements. The Bavarian individual farms and village branches were built between the windy hamlets that already existed at that time.

From the 9th century the area belonged to the Avarmark (Mark on the Danube, marchia orientalis) within the Duchy of Bavaria in the Franconian Empire.

The ecclesiastically responsible diocese was Passau, although there was an overlap with the diocese of Regensburg . The first written evidence in the form of documents date from this time, for example the Confirmatio Ludovici Pii of King Ludwig the Pious from the year 823 a. a. with the first mention of Naarn as Nardinum. Naarn is considered one of the original parishes of the Lower Mühlviertel , from which 21 parishes were later directly or indirectly removed.

The manor house in the village of Aisthofen in the area of the cadastral community Weinzierl was, as the Althof, the center and administrative seat of the so-called Regensburger Luß for centuries , whereby the donation from Grenzgrafen Wilhelm is of great local importance in this context.

In the Carolingian period, the Naarner places on the Danube Staffling and Au were named as settlements and trading centers and Danube ports, from which old trade routes led to Bohemia.

At the beginning of the 10th century the Bavarian settlement activity was affected by attacks by the Hungarians. A battle with an unfavorable outcome for the Hungarians is said to have taken place in the plain between Naarn and Mauthausen.

In the second half of the 10th century, the Babenbergs were entrusted with pacifying the Danube march. The Machland was part of this mark, which is considered the heartland of Austria and extended from the Erlabach east of the Enns on both sides of the Danube to west of the Vienna Woods. Leopold I became margrave in 976 and in 996 the name Ostarrichi (Austria) was first mentioned for this area.

The only manor in the Naarn area is the Harter Schlössel , which was probably built at the time of the Hungarian invasions in the 10th century and was under the influence of the Lords of Perg during the Babenberg period. Their property was confiscated by the sovereign in 1180 and later appears as a sovereign fiefdom, which was initially held by the lords of Mitterberg, then the lords of Kapellen and the Liechtensteiners. At the end of the 18th century, the Hartschlössl was demolished by the Count of Thürheim because it was dilapidated and the property was sold for agricultural purposes.

Modern times

The municipality was affected by the French wars in 1805, when around 5000 enemy soldiers set up camp on the meadows between Markt Au and Naarn and inflicted heavy damage on the local population with attacks and looting, and claimed food, feed and fuel without accepting pay. In 1809, during further armed conflicts, the Au market was fired at by the French from the other bank of the Danube, and almost all of it was cremated.

In 1850, following the abolition of the old rulership administration, the four local communities Naarn, Markt Au an der Donau, Baumgarten and Ruprechtshofen with a total of 17 localities were established in today's Naarner municipality using the existing boundaries of the four cadastral municipalities.

In 1880, an independent communal body called Marktcommune Au an der Donau was founded in the Au an der Donau market area to manage the special assets from the patrimonial era, with an initial capital of 500 guilders at its disposal.

In 1889, the first Raiffeisenkasse of the Mühlviertel was founded in the local community of Naarn as an advance fund association for the parish of Naarn.

The First World War claimed 63 dead or missing in Naarn, of which 21 were from the municipality of Naarn, 20 from the market municipality of Au an der Donau, 12 from the municipality of Baumgarten and 10 from the municipality of Ruprechtshofen.

Like many other Upper Austrian municipalities, the Naarner communities and the villages of Dirnwagram, Maria Laab, Pratztrum and Wimm issued emergency money in the 1920s.

In 1930 the farmers in Naarn, Mitterkirchen, Baumgartenberg, Klam and Saxen founded the dairy cooperative Machland, based in Baumgartenberg, in order to enable cheaper marketing of milk and dairy products.

On January 1, 1937, the municipalities of Baumgarten, Naarn and Ruprechtshofen had merged to form an administrative community, while at the same time the Au an der Donau market with the municipalities of Weinzierl and Windegg was closed. Ultimately, however, the decision of the Upper Austrian Parliament to merge Au, Baumgarten, Naarn and Ruprechtshofen to form the municipality of Naarn im Machlande had to be implemented with effect from January 1, 1938.

During the Second World War, 140 dead and missing were to be mourned in Naarn. In 1945 Naarn was briefly in the American zone from May 5, 1945 and in the Soviet zone from May 11, 1945 to 1955 . The immediate post-war period was marked by the dissolution of the Mauthausen concentration camp and the associated flows of refugees, insufficient supplies and the subsequent normalization with the first free elections in Austria.

The first written mention of the parish can be found in a document from Abbot Pilgrim von Baumgartenberg from 1240. The ears of corn and fish indicate the livelihoods of the inhabitants from the fertile Machland and the Danube. Alois Lueger from Perg designed the coat of arms.
