The Donausteig is an Austrian - Bavarian long-distance hiking trail and, since summer 2010, has mostly led along the two banks of the Danube from Passau via Linz to St. Nikola shortly after Grein .

The path is a non-alpine long-distance hiking trail in Austria, is around 450 kilometers in length and leads in 23 stages through the area of ​​five Bavarian and 40 Austrian municipalities. The Donausteig runs largely in nature and leads to popular landscape and viewpoints.

41 official Donausteigrunden were signposted alongside the main path. 135 start, rest and panorama areas have been set up along the route and around four thousand marker boards have been set up. In Passau, the hiking trail follows on from the Goldsteig, which opened in 2007 .

In addition to the Danube Cycle Path , Danube shipping with a total of 15 Upper and Lower Austrian shipping piers and the culture on the Danube , the Donausteig is another project of the Advertising Association Danube Upper Austria with 37 Upper Austrian and 4 Bavarian member municipalities, which is partially funded by the public sector (EU, state, municipalities) .

A legend hike with Helmut Wittmann has been offered every year since 2014 . Harp and block pipe provide a stylish background.

Nature reserves

The Donausteig crosses the Natura 2000 and FFH areas of the Upper Danube and Aschach Valley with their near-natural slope and ravine forests , the bird sanctuary Upper Danube Valley , the FFH and bird sanctuary Traun-Donau-Auen , the planned Natura 2000 area Machland Nord , the nature reserves Donauleiten in Bavaria and Pesenbachtal , Rannatal , the valley of the Kleiner Kößlbach and Schlossberg Neuhaus .

The outstanding nature experiences include the Strudengau with the Stillenstein Gorge and the Wolf Gorge near Bad Kreuzen , the meadow landscape in Machland North, the Klam Gorge , the Pesenbach Valley , and the Upper Danube Valley in Upper Austria with the Schlögener Schlinge , the Ranna Valley and the valley of the Kleiner Kösslbach.

Buildings

  • Greinburg Castle in Grein: The oldest residential castle in Austria is open to the public. The historical rooms (knight's hall, palace chapel, diamond vault, Sala Terrena, arcade courtyard) and the Upper Austrian Maritime Museum can be visited. Guided tours after registration also give an insight into the Coburg festival rooms.

  • Clam Castle in the Perg district in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel: stands on a wooded ridge above the Klam market, sloping steeply to the Klam Gorge

Route

The Donausteig leads on both the northern and southern banks of the Danube from the three-river city of Passau via the cultural capital Linz to Grein , the lowest place in Upper Austria (218 meters in altitude).

Long-distance hikers can walk the entire 450 km of the Donausteig in several daily stages. Starting from Passau, passing the “Maria im Walde” chapel, you reach Freinberg , the starting point for the higher three-river view towards Passau. The path then runs through the Kleines Kösslbachtal nature reserve and further up the Donauleiten to Vichtenstein . The Donausteig then continues directly on the Danube to Wesenufer . The route continues to the “Vier-Viertel-Blick” and the “Schlögener Blick”, with a view of the Donausteig's greatest natural spectacle: the Schlögener Schlinge . Starting from Aschach , the path continues up to the Schaunberg castle ruins , to Eferding and finally to Wilhering . For example, you can take the ferry to Ottensheim .

Another stage includes the Pöstlingberg with the steepest adhesion railway in Europe, the Pöstlingbergbahn , and leads the hikers on to Linz with the interesting Linz old town , the New and Old Cathedral , the baroque Linz main square and the Ars Electronica Center , the Lentos Art Museum , the Castle Museum , the Nordico City Museum , the Brucknerhaus , the Linz State Theater and the Voestalpine Stahlwelt .

Starting from Linz, the route continues on gravel paths through the cultural landscape to Rohrbach , St. Florian and finally to Enns . You can take the ferry from Enghagen to Mauthausen and hike through the flat landscape and along dirt roads to Perg . From the town square in the center, the Donausteig continues to Baumgartenberg , via Clam Castle , the Klam Gorge to Saxen and finally via the Gobelwarte to Grein. The last stages run via St. Nikola and Sarmingstein to Waldhausen and finally back to Grein via Bad Kreuzen .

Donausteigrunden

The 41 Donausteigrunden were designed for excursion hikers. These also branch off the main route of the Donausteige and run into the hinterland as well as to numerous viewing and adventure points.

Wilhering - farmers and lumberjacks

The starting point is the ferry pier in Wilhering . On the main road in the direction of Linz, the route leads through the village and on over a dirt road. The view over Ottensheim and Wilhering can be enjoyed from a hill . The hiking trail continues uphill through the Kürnberger Forest and then back down the valley to the Mühlbach settlement along a ravine with an integrated nature trail. You get back to the Danube over fields and hills. At the Ottensheim-Wilhering power plant , the path reconnects to the Donausteig and leads back to Wilhering.

City hiking trail Pöstlingberg

The starting point of the hiking trail is the Donausteig / Urfahrmarkt stopping board right in front of the Ars Electronica Center . With a direct view of the Linz culture mile with the Lentos Art Museum , the Brucknerhaus and the Linz Castle , the hiking trail leads along the Danube, past the New Town Hall to Obere Donaustraße. In the further course the path crosses the route of the Pöstlingbergbahn , the steepest adhesion railway in Europe. To the left it goes on into the Schablederweg, which mostly runs next to the rails of the Pöstlingbergbahn. Animal lovers can visit the nearby Linz zoo.

The path continues up to the 537 meter high Pöstlingberg , which is also called the Acropolis of Linz. The Linzer Grottenbahn , the Baroque pilgrimage basilica and the rose garden are other interesting points along the hiking trail and are part of the Pöstlingberg adventure world. The grotto train leads through a colorful fairytale world that shows scenes from children's fairy tales. On the lower floor of the fortification tower is the Linz main square around 1900 in miniature. The panorama plateau "Siebenmerz Mariä" offers a far-reaching view of the city of Linz.

The Collegium Petrinum , an episcopal grammar school, which was built at the end of the 19th century, can be reached via the steep Way of the Cross. Then the route leads back to the rest area in front of the Ars Electronica Center. After this hike, you can explore the nearby old town of Linz , which can be reached directly via the Nibelungen Bridge .

Stage Linz-Enns

The starting point is the “Hartheimerstraße” tram stop in Ebelsberg. Along the trail, head towards St. Florian under the motorway until the path branches off to the left and turns into a dirt road. The path leads to Ölkam and from there to Rohrbach near St. Florian. From there it goes through the village towards the forest, from which, after a short ascent, the view of the city and the monastery can be enjoyed. It goes through the village, past the municipal office down to the Ipfbach . In Weilling there are other options for beautiful views of St. Florian and the monastery. Then you are in Tillysburg from there to Volkersdorf. There is a panoramic view from the Rabenberg. The last step leads directly to Enns via a gravel path.

Donausteig communities (alphabetical)

Of the 45 Donausteig communities, five are in Bavaria and 40 in Upper Austria .

The route leads through a total of seven Upper Austrian Leader regions (from west to east): Sauwald region, Danube-Bohemian Forest region, Hausruck Nord region, Eferding region, Urfahr-West region, Linz-Land region and Strudengau region .
