description

Location, establishment

The Gobelwarte was built in 1894 by the Austrian Tourist Club, Strudengau Section, and is still in their possession today. It stands on the so-called trestle wall and is named after the gobel, its highest point. The control room is a landmark of the town of Grein. Nearby are the villages of Herdmann and Oberbergen of the Lettental cadastral community.

Hiking trails, view

The Gobelwarte is a lookout point of the Donausteig and the Greiner hiking trail network with a rest area . Your platform offers a view of Grein and the Strudengau in the east and northeast. The Gobelwarte has also been a station for the Donausteiggipfel staging since 2019 .

history

The control room was opened on June 24, 1894. It stands on a four meter high boulder; the steel structure was eleven meters high at the time. During the opening, the observation tower was (at least verbally) transferred to the municipality of Grein. In 1926 the observation tower was painted and new steps were added. In 1961, the forest property around the control room was acquired so that a clear view could be ensured in the long term.

New building

New tapestry room

According to a static report, from April 2010 only five people were allowed to enter the fourteen-meter-high steel construction at the same time. Since renovation was out of the question, the construction of a new building four meters higher for 130,000 euros was considered and financing options were sought. As an alternative, a closure may be necessary. The Gobelwarte was submitted by the Strudengau region as a LEADER project, with total costs of 173,400 euros. In consultation with the municipality of Grein, the owner started a fundraising campaign in March 2010. The new Gobelwarte was finally built in 2018, was accessible from autumn 2018 and was officially opened in May 2019.

Description of the new gobel observatory

Claus Pröglhöf from architecture and beyond ZT was entrusted with the planning of the building, who tried to incorporate the elegance, grace and dynamism of a dancing woman into the design. More than 26 tons of steel were used. The perceptible vibrations are intentional and are due to the twisting of the three supports to each other. The control room is eight meters higher than the construction that was demolished in 2018.
