The Mauthausen Pharmacy Museum is located in the Pragstein Castle in the market town of Mauthausen in Upper Austria . The museum is a pharmacy museum .

description

After the decision to set up a public pharmacy museum in Mauthausen in 2002, the art historian and museum custodian Barbara Groß was commissioned to implement a professional museum concept previously developed by Franz Pötscher.

The foundation of the museum, which opened in 2007, is the pharmacy history collection of the Aichberger family of pharmacists from Mauthausen , which particularly shows the development of small country pharmacies. The exhibition shows the history of the Austrian pharmacy and the practical work of the pharmacist in the laboratory using around 1,600 exhibits . The museum has an area of two hundred square meters available for the permanent exhibition and other museum activities.

History of the collection

Norbert Rudolf Aichberger (1896–1982) was the owner of the Mauthausen pharmacy from 1929 to 1973 and kept numerous old inventory items from the fund of the pharmacy founded in 1846, so that, in connection with a lively collecting activity, an extensive and historically interesting collection was created over the years. Norbert Friedrich Aichberger (* 1935), owner of the pharmacy from 1973 to 2004, continued the collection, made it available in 2002 for the establishment of the pharmacy museum in Pragstein Castle and was intensively involved in scientific research and documentation. In the meantime, the collection has grown through donations from other pharmacies.

Support of the museum

The organization and operator is the local history and museum association Mauthausen Schloss Pragstein, which has existed since 1932 with a war-related interruption. In addition to the pharmacy museum, the Mauthausen local history museum, the Prof. Gerstmayr museum and a trophy museum are also sponsored by the association. Chairman of the association:

  • Josef Göbl (1932 to 1935)
  • Franz Pfenneberger (1935 to 1938)
  • Otto Guem (from 1953)
  • Franz Mohl
  • Karl Scherb
  • Norbert Aichinger (1979 to 2010)
