Pharmacy history

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pharmacy history (also used synonymously with the history of pharmacy ) or pharmacy history is the study of the historical developments in pharmacy or pharmacy . It is therefore primarily concerned with the history of pharmaceuticals and drug therapy, pharmacies and the pharmaceutical industry, and with people who exerted influence on the pharmacy of their time. It uses the methods of general history and is at the same time part of the history of the natural sciences , since pharmacy relates to the scientific principles. But it is also close to the history of medicine . Pharmaceutical history is a pharmaceutical sub-discipline and forms a specialist group in the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG) .

Pharmaceutical history is a subject at universities . There are independent chairs for pharmacy history in Germany in Braunschweig and Marburg, elsewhere it is represented by lecturers . Outside the universities, the German Society for the History of Pharmacy represents the subject in Germany .

The historical lines of development in the history of pharmacy, drug manufacture and pharmacy also bring the museums that deal with this topic closer. There are around 40 of them in Germany, including the larger ones in Bad Münstereifel, Cottbus, Dortmund, Hamburg-Altona, Heidelberg, Hofgeismar, Rheine and Weißenburg; another four within the German-speaking area in Austria, one in Switzerland and one in South Tyrol.
