Christoph Friedrich (born February 18, 1954 in Salzwedel ) is a German pharmacist , pharmacy historian and professor at the Philipps University of Marburg . Since 2000 he has headed the Institute for the History of Pharmacy there .

Career

Christoph Friedrich was born on February 18, 1954 in Salzwedel in the Altmark . In 1974 he began his pharmacy studies at the University of Greifswald , which he graduated with "distinction" in 1979 with a diploma in pharmacy . He then worked as an assistant in the Pharmacy Section at the University of Greifswald. In addition, he completed postgraduate studies in history , which he completed in 1983 as a graduate historian. In the same year Friedrich became Dr. rer. nat . PhD with a thesis on pharmaceutical history. In 1987 he completed his habilitation in the history of pharmacy. From 1988 to 1992 he worked as a senior assistant at the Pharmacy Section of the University of Greifswald and also gave lectures on the history of medicine . In 1990 he received the license to teach (Venia legendi) for the history of medicine and in 1992 was appointed C3 professor and head of the department for the history of pharmacy / social pharmacy at the University of Greifswald.

In 2000, Friedrich followed Fritz Krafft's call to the C4 professorship for the history of pharmacy at the University of Marburg , where he became director of the institute for the history of pharmacy. From 2002 to 2005 he was Dean of Studies in Marburg and from 2005 to 2007 he was Dean of the Pharmacy Department.

In 2015 he took over the position of head of the pharmacy office in Marburg, the Hessian state examination and investigation office in the health sector.

Research priorities

Friedrich's research interests include the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century, in particular drug history, pharmacy in the Nazi era and the GDR , the cultural history of pharmacy, pharmacist biographies and correspondence, but also the history of university pharmacy, pharmaceutical companies and institutions.

He supervises numerous dissertations, forty of which have been successfully defended so far. Fifty diploma theses, which have now been completed, were written under his direction, and he gave over 250 lectures at home and abroad.

  • 1988: Carl Wilhelm Scheele Prize of the Pharmaceutical Society for the habilitation thesis

  • 2011: Orosi Medal from the Accademia Italiana di Storia della Farmacia
  • 2013: Georg Urdang Medal from the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy at the 41st International Congress on the History of Pharmacy in Paris
  • 2015: Carmen Francés Medal of the Académie Internationale d'Histoire de la Pharmacie at the 42nd International Congress for the History of Pharmacy in Istanbul
  • 2016: Wandering Medicinal Herbs Prize of the City of Königsee for his research on the history of Thuringian pharmacy, especially on the history of the oleiferous trade

Publications

Friedrich has written over forty books to date and published more than 350 publications. From 1993–2011 he led a DFG project to publish the correspondence of pharmacist and university professor JB Trommsdorff , 2011–2013 together with K. Grundmann the DFG project to develop, digitize and make available Emil von Behring's estate on the Internet and since 2016 DFG project for the creation of the 3rd supplement to the German Pharmacist Biography .

Friedrich was co-editor of the "Publications of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy" (Volume 59, 1994 to Volume 61, 1999). He is currently co-editor of “Sources and Studies on the History of Pharmacy” (from Volume 82, 2004) and of “Publications on the History of Pharmacy” (from Volume 1).

From volume 11 (2012) onwards, he is the editor of the book series “Sites of pharmaceutical practice, teaching and research” founded by Peter Dilg . Since 2000 Friedrich has been co-editor of the journal “Geschichte der Pharmazie” and since 2013 co-editor of the book series “Academia Marburgensis - Contributions to the History of Philipps University Marburg” (from volume 12).
