Fritz Krafft

Fritz Adolf Krafft (born July 10, 1935 in Hamburg ) is a German science historian and university professor .

Life

After attending the humanistic grammar school in Lübeck and Hamburg until 1955, Fritz Krafft began studying classical philology , philosophy and the history of natural sciences at the University of Hamburg . Between 1958 and 1962 he enjoyed a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He graduated in 1964 with a dissertation on Comparative Studies on Homer and Hesiod for Dr. phil. from.

After six years as a research assistant at the Hamburg Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, he successfully completed his habilitation in 1968 with the thesis Dynamic and Static Approach in Ancient Mechanics for the subject of the History of Natural Science . After two more years as a private lecturer in Hamburg, he was appointed professor for the history of natural science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1970 .

In 1988 he moved to a professorship for the history of pharmacy and natural science at the Philipps University of Marburg . There he was also managing director of the Institute for the History of Pharmacy until his retirement in 2000.

Krafft was a member from 1977 to 1993 and 1998 to 2001 and from 1981 to 2001 President of the National Committee of the Federal Republic of Germany in the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS), Division of History of Science. During two terms of office, from 1977 to 1983, he was also President of the Society for the History of Science and in 1978 founded its publication organ, Reports on the History of Science , which he edited up to the 30th year (2007). He has written more than 50 books and over 350 articles in handbooks, compilations and scientific journals and is also the editor of several book series on the history of science (list of publications "Essays, Books" on the official website).

Fritz Krafft is married and has three children, two of them from his first marriage.

Awards (selection)

Krafft became a correspondent in 1971 and has been a full member of the Académie Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences since 1981 . Since 1984 he has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and, since 2006, an external member of the humanities class of the Academy of Nonprofit Sciences in Erfurt . In 2000 he received the plaque of honor from the Otto von Guericke Society and in 2002 the Johannes Valentin Medal from the German Society for the History of Pharmacy . In 2007 he was made an honorary member of the Society for the History of Science.
