The German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG) is the scientific specialist society for pharmacy . It pursues the goal of promoting the pharmaceutical sciences and disseminating pharmaceutical-scientific knowledge in the professional community and beyond.

The company also regularly issues expert opinions on pharmaceutical and professional policy issues. One focus is on a diverse range of advanced training courses for pharmacists through several hundred regional lecture evenings every year. Every year the society holds a scientific congress lasting several days at a pharmaceutical university location. She is the editor of a membership journal committed to the concept of advanced training (until 2012 “ Pharmacy in our time ”, from 2013 “ Pharmakon - Medicines in Science and Practice ”) as well as the scientific journal “ Archiv der Pharmazie ”, which has been published since 1822 (subtitle since 2005, “Chemistry in Life Sciences ").

structure

The society has about 10,000 members, mostly pharmacists and pharmacy students. It is divided into 15 regional groups, each with its own board. For historical reasons, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional group bears the name Scheele Society. In addition, the members are organized into nine specialist groups and four working groups, depending on their area of interest, which represent the individual specialist areas of pharmaceutical science. The presidium consists of the president, three deputy presidents (vice presidents), the general secretary, the vice president for finance, the president of the immediately preceding electoral term, the chairmen of the regional groups, the chairmen of the specialist groups, the chairmen of the working groups, a representative of the ABDA federal association German Pharmacists' Associations, a representative of the sponsoring members and the chairman of the Federal Association of Pharmacy Students in Germany. The President of the Society (2020 to 2023) is Dagmar Fischer, Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. The president's term of office is four years. The office is based in Frankfurt am Main.

history

The company was founded on November 6, 1890 under the leadership of the university professor Hermann Thoms (1859–1931) in Berlin. The aim was to strengthen the not yet very well developed scientific pharmacy. Thoms was chairman of the company for a total of 39 years. From the beginning, lectures and scientific excursions determined the activities of the society, which initially concentrated on the Berlin area. The establishment of regional groups throughout Germany catalyzed the supra-regional expansion from around 1925. In 1930 the society had 4430 members. For the period between 1890 and 1940 2837 lectures are documented, about half of which were devoted to pharmaceutical-chemical topics and a quarter to questions of drug production. More recently, pharmacology and pharmacotherapy have dominated the range of topics in advanced training events. In 2010, a membership of 10,000 was reached for the first time.

Publications

In order to publish the lectures held, the company initially published the journal “Reports of the (German) Pharmaceutical Society”. The organ merged in 1924 with the " Archive of Pharmacy ", which had existed since 1822 , the scientific organ of the German Pharmacists' Association. The contributions concentrated more and more on pharmaceutical-chemical topics with little reference to pharmacy practice. In 1972 this led to the founding of a new, additional organ under the title “Pharmacy in Our Time”. There was room for overview and advanced training articles in thematic booklets. In 2013 the journal was again replaced by “Pharmakon - Medicines in Science and Practice”. The magazine appears in the Avoxa media group of German pharmacists; The editor is the Frankfurt university professor Theodor Dingermann . The DPhG regularly issues statements on current pharmaceutical topics such as the evaluation of drug innovations, the substitution of finished drugs or training issues. Each time after the annual scientific congress, a volume from the book series “Sites of pharmaceutical practice, teaching and research” is published on behalf of the DPhG with contributions on the history of pharmacy at the event location (editor: Christoph Friedrich ).

Congresses and events

The DPhG annually organizes a scientific congress lasting several days at a pharmaceutical university location. The annual conference took place in Saarbrücken in 2017 and in Hamburg in 2018. In 2019 the conference location is Heidelberg. Plenary lectures, short lectures and poster contributions are presented here in English. There are also separate conferences for doctoral candidates and post-docs.
