International Society for the History of Pharmacy

The International Society for the History of Pharmacy ( IGGP , also ISHP ) is a scientific society for the research and presentation of the history of pharmacy . The IGGP does not pursue any commercial interests and, for example, also appears under English or French-speaking names such as International Society for the History of Pharmacy or Société Internationale d'Histoire de la Pharmacie . The umbrella organization of 29 national societies (as of 09/2019) regularly organizes conferences and awards every two years a research fellowship . The organs of publication are an annual newsletter and the scientific journal Pharmaceutical Historian , which is published in cooperation with the British Society for the History of Pharmacy .

On August 18, 1926, the Austrian Ludwig Winkler, the Germans Fritz Ferchl, Georg Urdang and Walther Zimmermann together with Otto Raubenheimer from the USA founded the Society for the History of Pharmacy in Innsbruck . The inner board was composed of

Last but not least, the magazine The Lectures of the General Meeting of the Society for the History of Pharmacy, which was published from the following year 1927, provided the society with a rapid influx of pharmacists from then 17 nations, so that the General Meeting decided on an international orientation of the company in the same year. Parallel to the general meeting, the company set up in Berlin an exhibition of the local castle museum under the title Art - and Cultural History from old pharmacy .

After the time of National Socialism and the Second World War , the company was reorganized and in 1949 it was renamed the International Society for the History of Pharmacy . Since the German members formed the largest regional group from the very beginning, they gave themselves an independent statute as the German Society for the History of Pharmacy in 1966 , which was revised in 1996 . In 1999 the international company was restructured to become an umbrella organization for national associations.
