from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Josef Maria Winkler (born January 12, 1873 in Innsbruck ; † July 8, 1935 in Hall in Tirol ) was an Austrian pharmacist and pharmacy historian as well as chairman of the Society for the History of Pharmacy.

Life

Ludwig Josef Maria Winkler was born into a family of pharmacists that had lived in Innsbruck for centuries. His father was Franz Friedrich Winkler (* 1833; † 1895) and his mother, Maria Winkler, née Hueber (* 1836; † 1902) from Absam . As a pharmacist and private lecturer at the University of Innsbruck, L. Winkler was one of the founding fathers of the Society for the History of Pharmacy and became its first chairman in 1926. In 1926 he invited the pharmaceutical historians Ferchl from Mittenwald , Raubenheimer / Brooklyn , Gelder and Urdang from Berlin and Zimmerman / Illenau to Austria in preparation . On August 18th, the founding meeting of the “Society for the History of Pharmacy” took place on the family estate in Hall / Tyrol in the absence of Hermann Gelder .

On November 28, 1932, Winkler presented a bust of the pharmacist and university professor Hermann Thoms , which he had donated, to the pharmaceutical department of the Institute for the History of Medicine and Natural Sciences at the University of Berlin.

Professional background

He began his professional training on September 1, 1889 in his father's pharmacy, Franz F. Winkler, and continued his apprenticeship in Sterzing . After successfully completing the internship examination in 1892, he studied in Innsbruck and Munich. He obtained the scientific degree of Magister (Mag. Pharm.) On June 26, 1894. He performed military service with a state rifle regiment in Innsbruck. After his time as a pharmaceutical assistant, he took over the Winkler city pharmacy in his hometown from his older brother with effect from January 1, 1900. He received his doctorate in philosophy on March 1, 1924 at the University of Innsbruck.

Teaching assignments for history of pharmacy and drug preparation theory

In the course of the implementation of the university study regulations for pharmacists in Austria issued on August 18, 1922, the Innsbruck city pharmacy owner Winkler was appointed as a lecturer for the newly introduced subject of "history of pharmacy" on August 7, 1923, and from 1924/25 he also represented the teaching of pharmaceuticals "at the University of Innsbruck . He gave lectures and held exercises with the students on the formulation and handling of pharmaceutical technology. In 1927 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer. The pharmacist and pharmacy historian Fritz Ferchl (* 1892, † 1953), one of the co-founders of the international society for the history of pharmacy , received his doctorate here at Innsbruck University in 1931 with a dissertation on the history of the origin of the term saponin . Ludwig Winkler was next to university professor Ludwig Kofler (* 1891, † 1951), one of the two referees for Fritz Ferchl's doctoral thesis.

Library and Collection

Winkler owned an extensive library. Some of his reference works were marked with the "Old Winkler book mark". An ex-libris with the book owner's name sign from 1793 showed the fired alchemical hearth of the laboratory, where "two putti create" with the name tag "Fr. I. Winkler ”for the ancestor Franz Ignaz Winkler (* 1770; † 1826). Ludwig Winkler had a personal bookmark designed that combined a heraldic coat of arms with the pharmacist's profession. He looked after and enlarged the private pharmaceutical collection, especially the pharmaceutical objects from the history of the pharmacy, especially from the dispensary and the laboratory of his ancestors.

Ludwig Winkler was no longer able to attend the Basel general meeting of the “Society for the History of Pharmacy” in 1934 for health reasons. A year earlier he had handed over the management of the Innsbruck City Pharmacy to his eldest son Franz Winkler (* 1901; † 1953).

Son Franz Winker, who became the owner of the old pharmacy in 1935, saved the entire collection from the bombing on December 15, 1943 by initially storing it in the basement and later moving it to various locations in Tyrol to bring it to safety. In 1952/63, the original pharmacy boxes from 1742, vessels, mortars and furnishings such as the material chamber table with scales and the prescription table were restored and then exhibited again in the private museum of the rebuilt city pharmacy.
