Fritz Ferchl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fritz Ferchl , actually Friedrich Ferchl, (* July 7, 1892 in Neubeuert , † February 19, 1953 in Mittenwald ) was a German pharmacist and pharmacy historian. He devoted himself primarily to the pharmaceutical cultural history.

Life

He grew up as Friedrich Gottfried Michael Ferchl in the Catholic family of the customs officer Friedrich Ferchl (* 1859; † 1929) and his wife Auguste Elisabeth Ferchl (* 1863; † 1936). After returning as a volunteer from the First World War , Ferchl studied pharmacy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1918 to 1920 and completed his studies with the state examination. In the same year he became a pharmacy administrator in Murnau . In 1923 he took over the Marienapotheke in Mittenwald and became a pharmacy owner. Part-time, he wrote a research paper to the emergence of the concept of saponin and graduated with her 1931 Dr. phil. at the Austrian Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck . The referees for his dissertation were the private lecturer Ludwig Winkler and the university professor Ludwig Kofler (* 1891, † 1951), head of the Institute for Pharmacognosy since 1926.

At the University of Innsbruck , he obtained the academic title of Dr. phil. habil. for the field of history of pharmacy according to the German Reich Habilitation Ordinance , which was in force in Austria during the National Socialist era . A corresponding certificate was issued to him dated July 15, 1939.

Co-founder of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy

On August 18, 1926, Ferchl took part in the founding of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy in Austria . In 1929, Ferchl worked closely with chairman Ludwig Winkler and board members Hermann Gelder , Georg Urdang and Walther Zimmermann in his role as second secretary and editor . Georg Urdang counted Fritz Ferchl as well as Walther Zimmermann, Hermann Gelder and also the pharmacist Georg Edmund Dann among the "more or less" important authors of pharmaceutical historiography during the Weimar Republic in Germany.

Curator of the German Pharmacy Museum

Fritz Ferchl was one of the founding fathers of the Pharmacy Museum in 1926 and from 1937 first curator (curator) of the German Pharmacy Museum . At the time of the war-related closure of the museum, which was then located in Munich, in 1939, Ferchl was a member of the Wehrmacht with the rank of senior pharmacist and later as head of the military district park XVIII in Salzburg until 1945. However, after the bombing raid on Munich in autumn 1943, he was able to take part in the recovery of museum objects on site. In the first post-war years, too, he campaigned for the preservation of the pharmacy museum at a new location and for the return transport of relocated exhibits.

Follower in the Nazi regime

Ferchl's political stance in the Third Reich is classified as a “fellow traveler” of the regime . In 1934 he was appointed by "Reichsapothekerführer" Albert Schmierer as the "Chairman for professional history for the entire German-speaking area".

Christ as a pharmacist

For the visual representation of Christ as a pharmacist , which Ferchl judged to be the "strange flower of the Theologica mystica and Pharmacia religiosa", he collected and explained a large number of images. He undertook a multi-level, art-historical grouping of all pictures of this motif: 1. Christ stands freely behind the recipe table without a background; 2. It forms the foreground of the picture, the center and background of which are articulated; 3. Christ is depicted in the center of the picture, standing at the prescription table, pharmacy shelves can be seen in the background; 3. Loosening up of the motif: besides Christ in the dispensary, secondary characters and secondary scenes are painted.

Awards

  • In 1948 he was awarded the Schelenz badge.
  • In 1948/49 he was chairman of the Bavarian State Chamber of Pharmacies .
  • In 1952 he became a full member of L'Académie Internationale d'Histoire de la Pharmacie .
  • He was an honorary member of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy .

Fritz Ferchl Medal

At the suggestion of the honorary professor for the history of pharmacy Wolfgang-Hagen Hein (* 1920; † 2003), the German Society for the History of Pharmacy (DGGP) decided in honor of Fritz Ferchl to mint a commemorative medal on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1972. The Munich sculptor Guido Goertz (* 1912; † 1992) designed the bronze medal with a diameter of 80 millimeters. The portrait of Fritz Ferchl and his life data adorned the front. The reverse bore the inscription PHARMACIAE HISTORIAE VIM REPRAESENTANDO AUXIT (“He increased the validity of pharmacy history by illustrating”) around a late Gothic. Pharmacy mortar . The personalities who were honored in the anniversary year 1972 included pharmaceutical historians at home and abroad who had distinguished themselves literarily and museologically in the spirit of Ferchl, including Georg Edmund Dann , Wolfgang-Hagen Hein , Günter Kallinich , Rudolf Schmitz , Wolfgang Schneider and the Innsbruck pharmacy owner Franz Winkler (* 1929), a grandson of the Austrian pharmacist, pharmacy historian and co-founder of the Society for the History of Pharmacy , Ludwig Winkler . The rights to award the Fritz Ferchl Medal were transferred in 1999 by the DGGP to the Foundation and Society of the German Pharmacy Museum .
