Ferdinand Schmidt (pharmacist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ferdinand Schmidt (born September 16, 1909 in Stolp ; † November 28, 1981 in Schwerin ) was a German pharmacist , author and founder of a pharmaceutical-historical library. His private specialist library came into the care of the University of Greifswald in 1996 .

Life

Years of teaching and study

Schmidt spent his childhood and youth in what was then Stolp . He attended the local high school. After graduating from high school, from 1931 to 1933 he completed the two-year apprenticeship as a trainee in the Blücher pharmacy in his hometown, which was prescribed for his career aspiration as a pharmacist.

After passing the preliminary examination, Schmidt began studying pharmacy in 1934, initially at Berlin's Friedrich Wilhelms University . In the same year he continued his studies at the University of Rostock , where he successfully passed the pharmaceutical state examination in 1936. Then he had to complete another practical pharmacy job as a "candidate in pharmacy" for a year. Schmidt spent the compulsory half-year with the former princely court pharmacist Gustav Kühn in Schleiz. In 1937 he received his license to practice medicine .

From 1937 to 1939 he continued his university studies at the Göttingen University and the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald . Caused by the outbreak of the Second World War, he was unable to obtain a doctorate. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht and at the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the English, from which he was released in 1945.

Working life

In the second half of 1945, Schmidt started working for the Zarrentiner pharmacy, which had been in a building on Breite Straße since 1844 and was based there until 1966. The owner of the Schaalsee pharmacy had been Schmidt's father-in-law, the Pomeranian pharmacist Oscar Selle, since 1936. In 1949, Selle handed over the management of the pharmacy to his son-in-law and partner Ferdinand Schmidt. After the nationalization of the pharmacy business in the GDR, Schmidt continued to run the Schaalsee pharmacy as the so-called state manager until 1975.

Since 1946 Schmidt built an extensive specialist library on pharmacy in his private apartment. He maintained appropriate contacts to specialist colleagues and pharmacy historians in West Germany and abroad, which he expanded after the founding of the Federal Republic and the GDR.

Even in his retirement, Schmidt devoted himself to pharmaceutical history. He also volunteered in the Pharmaceutical Society of the GDR and the Scheele Society. Ferdinand Schmidt died in 1981 as a result of an accident.

photography

In his amateur photos, Schmidt documented relevant events in his hometown, e. B. the deployment of the Stahlhelm , in front of the town hall in Stolp on September 9, 1928, with the propaganda demonstration by Prince Oscar of Prussia .

When Umberto Nobile used the airship port Seddin in the spring of 1928 on his way to the North Pole to have a damaged tail unit on the Italia repaired at the shipyard , Schmidt photographed him in the company of Stolper high school students.

Schmidt made photographic recordings of personal encounters throughout his life. Schmidt sent a souvenir photo of his encounter with Gerhart Hauptmann in 1962 to the editorial staff of the newspaper “Neues Deutschland”, which published it on the occasion of the poet's 100th birthday.

Collections

Pharmaceutical history private library

In the commemorative publication for the 800th anniversary of Zarrentin in 1994 , Schmidt's merit as a knowledgeable collector of pharmaceutical literature is recognized, which he built up as a private library. Under the heading “Search and exchange corner” in the “Messages for members of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy”, Schmidt offered surplus copies from his book and magazine collection in 1954 and provided information about which titles he was interested in for his pharmacy history library . During the build-up phase of his Zarrentin library, he looked for the books “History of the privileged pharmacies in Berlin” and “The Royal Court Pharmacy” by Hermann Gelder and Georg Urdang's “The Pharmacist as Subject and Object of Literature”, first published in 1926 and illustrated with 16 portraits.

At the end of the day, the library's holdings were around 3,000 volumes, although the specialist journals it had collected were not included in this number. Occasionally at the 12th Congress of the Pharmaceutical Society of the GDR in Berlin, his services "to the collection of pharmaceutical documents and the establishment of a valuable library" were recognized by the award of an honorary certificate on October 23, 1978.

Coins and postage stamps

Schmidt's hobbies included collecting coins and stamps relating to the natural sciences. He expanded his coin collection with pharmacist portraits on medals and plaques, with which he occasionally illustrated his magazine articles, e.g. B. with a picture of a Böttger porcelain medal (stay at the Königsstein fortress 1706–1707).

Publications and lectures

Schmidt has written over 40 articles on the history of pharmaceuticals for specialist journals in post-war Germany since 1950. He also gave a number of lectures, e. B. at training events offered by the Pharmaceutical Society of the GDR and the Scheele Society. He also devoted himself to the high-profile shop window design of pharmacies. For example, his design draft was implemented on the occasion of the 150th birthday of Carl Spitzweg (* 1808) and received a lot of attention. In 1969, Schmidt put together an exhibition with the title: From Fontane's time as a pharmacist, from objects from his collection. B. were shown in Schwerin.

In the journal “Pharmaziegeschichtliche Rundschau”, pharmacy historians wrote compressed contents of the specialist articles by Schmidt.

In 1973, Schmidt wrote several articles on the history of pharmacy for the readers of the GDR magazine “medicamentum”.

Schmidt's publication on the history of the Stolper Apotheken in 1955 was included as a source in the “Baltic Studies” published by the Society for Pomeranian History and Art because of its genealogical evidence. Schmidt's treatise on Franziskus Joel (1979) was one of his last biographical researches on outstanding pharmacists .
