Hans Gerstmayr

Hans Gerstmayr (born April 14, 1882 in St. Valentin-Rubring an der Enns  ; † October 28, 1987 ) was an Austrian engraver , medalist , artist ( steel cutter ) and student of Michael Blümelhuber .

Life

Hans Gerstmayr was born the son of a bricklayer and a small farmer. Because of his talent he came to the monastery of the Kalasantines in Vienna . With Josef Stepan he learned engraving and die cutting . Marshall, Cizek, Hofner and Stefan Schwartz were his teachers and supporters in modeling, driving and chasing as well as in the art of medals .

His work brought three first prizes, which he submitted to competitions at the technical college for engravers and the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1899 and 1900. In 1905 he completed his military service and then worked as an engraver in Vienna. During these years of work he made steel cuts , pieces of jewelry and artful everyday items.

From 1907 to 1914 he stood at the side of Michael Blümelhuber and supported him in setting up his master school for iron processing in Steyr (closed in 1942). In 1914 the war effort followed . From 1920 until his retirement in 1951, he headed the metal arts and crafts department (engraving department) at the technical school for iron and steel processing in Steyr (today HTL -Steyr). His students included Karl A. Krepcik, Johann Angerbauer , Josef Primetzhofer, Friedrich Mayr , Josef Roithinger, Helmuth Gsöllpointner , Hans Köttenstorfer , Rudolf Fleischanderl, Franz Schatzl, Hans Kröll and Alfred Nefe.

Works

Hans Gerstmayr designed many artistic works such as steel cuts (oath-abbot crosses, embossing stamps , medals), countless metal driving works as pictures or panels for monuments and numerous grave crosses made of wrought iron and mostly made by hand as driving work in copper.

His most outstanding works include the Kremsmünsterer Prälatenring, the Kremsmünsterer Pectorale and the oath cross of the federal college in Steyr.

  • 1937 Gold medal at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition for his steel cutting work
  • 1952 Awarded the title of Government Councilor
  • Awarded the ring of honor and from 1972 honorary citizen of Mauthausen
  • Awarded the Medal of Honor of the City of Steyr

Exhibitions

  • The exhibition in 1985 in the Steyr steel cutting school Blümelhuber-Gerstmayr was an appreciation of the total work of art by both artists, in which Hans Gerstmayr still took part at the age of 103.
  • The memorial exhibition of Professor Hans Gerstmayr took place in Mauthausen in June 2008.
