Carl Hans Watzinger

Carl Hans Watzinger (born September 7, 1908 in Steyr ; † September 27, 1994 in Linz ) was an Austrian author and journalist . He also wrote under the pseudonym Bernhard Stauffer .

Live and act

Watzinger was originally an electrical engineer at the Steyr works . From 1936 to 1938 he stayed in Jena and began to write. The first publications were made due to contacts with the publishers Eugen Diederichs and Adam Kraft . From 1938 he lived in Linz and worked for the daily mail (Linz) , the Volksstimme and the farmer's newspaper of the Reichsnährstands . Together with numerous other authors he contributed to the confessional book of Austrian poets .

He became known for his historical novels with a German national tendency, with his Luther novel, Mensch aus Gotteshand, from 1938 being the most successful. He also wrote short stories, essays, plays, comedies, games and radio plays.

During the war he was responsible for agitation at the Reichsnährstand and was promoted by Reich Minister Erich Darré . In 1944 he published in the National Socialist Bozner Tagblatt .

After the war, he was initially banned from working for three years and then worked for many years as a freelance journalist for the ORF in Linz, where he mainly created pictures of Upper Austrian personalities and radio plays.

In 1947/1948 he worked as a film dramaturge and teacher for literary studies , theater history and dramaturgy . From 1954 he was editor-in-chief of a weekly magazine.

In 1967 he wrote the libretto for the operetta Everything speaks of Charpillon by Igo Hofstetter .

In 1970 he wrote the play Franz Jägerstätter or Self-Defense - A Bitter Comedy that has not yet been performed.

He was a member of the Innviertel artists' guild . He was married to Ulrike from 1947.
