Newtown is a town in Fairfield County , Connecticut , United States . At the United States Census 2010 , Newtown had 27,560 residents. Newtown was founded in 1705 and incorporated in 1711 .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 153.1 km 2 , of which 149.6 km 2 is land and 3.5 km 2 (= 2.22%) is water.
Newtown is located in northern Fairfield County , about 70 km southwest of Hartford and about 130 km northeast of New York City . Interstate 84 and US Highway 6 run in the north of the municipal area for the most part together from west to east. Major roads also include Connecticut State Route 25 north-south, Connecticut State Route 34 and Connecticut State Route 302 . A railway line from Conrail meanders from northwest to southeast through the town area.
In terms of area, Newtown is the fifth largest town in the state of Connecticut and borders Bethel , Bridgewater , Brookfield , Easton , Monroe , Oxford , Redding and Southbury . The northern boundary of the district forms the Housatonic River with the reservoir Lake Lillinoah , in the northeast Newtown borders the reservoir Lake Zoar on the same river. The river also forms the northern and northeastern border of Fairfield County.

Landmarks and municipal buildings
Newtown has some attractions of local or regional importance. Among them are the flagpole erected in 1876, the publishing house of the local weekly Newtown Bee , which has been published since 1877 and has belonged to the Smith family since 1881, and the Newtown Meeting House, whose weathercock, according to tradition , was used as a target by French soldiers stationed here during the War of Independence and is depicted in the seal of the city.
Hawley School, built in the 1920s, is another significant structure currently serving as an elementary school. The building has served different types of schools throughout its history, but the original structure has remained largely unchanged. Two extensions were built over the years.
Newtown's medical care was provided by Fairfield Hills Hospital, which was built in the 1930s but closed in 1995. Part of the film Sleepers was shot here in 1995. Newtown later bought the building.
Edmond Town Hall
The building, which was completed in the 1930s, includes rooms for the town administration as well as several rooms and halls for weddings, party events and lectures. The architect was Philip Sutherland, who also made the designs for the Cyrenius H. Booth Library.
Films are also shown in the building shortly after they leave mainstream movie theaters. Mary Elizabeth Hawley had the structure erected and dedicated in 1930 for the good of the community. It is named after the judge William Edmond; this was Hawley's maternal grandfather.

Parks and leisure
In the Town of Newton there are many recreational opportunities, numerous sports facilities allow swimming, tennis, softball, baseball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer and hiking. Parks include Treadwell Park, Dickinson Park, and Collis P. Huntington State Park .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Newtown was inhabited by 25,031 people. The population density was 167.3 people per km 2 . There were 8601 housing units, an average of 57.5 per km 2 . Newtown's population was 95.14% White , 1.75% Black or African American , 0.14% Native American , 1.40% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.64% said other races belong to and 0.89% named two or more races. 2.36% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Newtown were distributed to 8325 households out of which 44.7% were living in children under 18 years of age. 73.3% of households were married, 5.8% had a female head of household without a husband, and 18.6% were not families. 14.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 5.8% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size 3.24.
The population was divided into 29.3% minors, 4.4% 18–24 year olds, 32.5% 25–44 year olds, 25.1% 45–64 year olds and 8.7% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 104.9 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 103.5 men.
The median household income in Newtown was 90,193 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 99,192 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 68,965 versus $ 42,217 for women. The per capita income was $ 37,786. 3.1% of the population and 2.2% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 3.0% of minors and 3.9% of the age group 65 and over.
education
Newtown public schools include four elementary schools (Hawley School, Head O'Meadow School, Middle Gate School, and Sandy Hook Elementary School ) for grades 1 to 4, Reed Intermediate School for grades 5 and 6, and Newtown Middle School with grades 7 through 8 and Newtown High School with grades 9-12.
There are also several private and parish schools, including the St. Rose of Lima School, the Fraser-Woods School, and the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School .

Newtown Massacre
On December 14, 2012, one of the worst school rampages occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School , killing 26 people, including 20 elementary school children, before shooting himself. He had previously shot his mother and taken control of the weapons there.
