The Newtown Borough Historic District is a 40  hectares large listed area in the Borough of Newtown within the Town of Newtown in Fairfield County , Connecticut . The Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 1996 . The area of ​​the historical district includes buildings, some of which date from the 1780s. It also houses the Glover House and the Caleb Baldwin Tavern , both of which are separately registered in the NRHP.

In 1996, the District included 225 contributing buildings, two additional contributing structures, a site, and two contributing objects. The district was last expanded by a local statute in 2009.

The contributing site is a meadow known as Ram's Pasture , a former common land .

Significant buildings and structures in the district include:

  • Glover House
  • Caleb Baldwin Tavern : The inn is on the route taken by French military leader Rochambeau's troops in 1781 on their way to the Battle of Yorktown , Virginia and on their return in 1782. The two and a half story house was built around 1763. It is an example of traditional New England architecture of the 18th century and has retained some elements of construction and style from that period.
  • 17 Main Street, home of Arthur J. Smith, original editor of Newtown Bee newspaper , which has been published since 1877
  • Liberty Pole / Flagpole
  • Soldiers and Sailors Monument
  • Edmond Town Hall
  • Matthew Curtiss House , 44 Main Street, a Newtown Historical Society museum
  • Gene. Daniel Baldwin House, 38 Main Street, is a formally Georgian building that contrasts with most of the other buildings in the district
  • Cyrenius H. Booth Library
