Brookfield in King Philip's War

Brookfield is a town in Fairfield County in the US -amerikanischen State Connecticut . According to the United States Census , the city had 17,055 residents in 2014.

history

Before the English and Dutch traders settled the area, Native American Indians Pootatuck and Wyantenuck inhabited what is now Brookfield. In the northern area lived the Paugussett , a sister tribe of the Wyantenuck. The Indians were farmers, gatherers and hunters. The most important food sources were next to the animal prey such as deer, pigeons, squirrels, fish and rabbits home-grown corn, beans, squash and wild plants, such as acorns, chestnuts, hickory nuts and apples, which they in the rocky, heavily forested foothills of the Berkshire Mountains of Brookfield and New Milford reaped.

In the 18th century the parish was called "Newbury", composed of the names of the three towns that made up the area: New Milford, New town and Danbury . Because travel to the surrounding churches was difficult in the winter, the General Assembly granted the Fellowship the right to hold services in their private homes from September to March in 1752, and in 1754 permission was given to set up a parish of their own in Newbury. On September 28, 1757, the first parish church was consecrated and Reverend Thomas Brooks was ordained as pastor . In honor of this man, the city was renamed Brookfield in 1778.

Economic development

Mills had been in operation along the Still River since 1732. Brookfield was a thriving town with flour mills, sawmills, cotton mills, lime and iron furnaces, a knife factory, a paper mill, and other facilities. The grist mill is still in the Brookfield-Craft Center today. A central water supply was created in 1837 by the Iron Works Aqueduct Company , which needed the water from mountain springs for their works and thus also supplied the population with drinking water.

Before 1912, the city had two train stations: one in the Iron Works District near Brookfield Market and a second, Junction Station, near Junction Road and Stony Hill Road.

In 1915 Brookfield got access to electricity because the Danbury Bethel & Gas and Electric Company needed it for their production. Here, among others, Wildey J. Moore developed the 0.475 Wildey Magnum pistol, which was used in the 1985 Charles Bronson film Death Wish III - The Avenger of New York .

In the early 1970s, the city was home to the USA LEGO headquarters.

Since the early 1980s, Brookfield has transformed from a small colonial New England town into a major shopping and consumer goods hub. The quality of living and the tourism industry have also become more attractive with the creation of Candlewood Lake.
