useful information
After the first documentary mention in 799 , the settlement in the area of today's old town grew under the protection of the castle . Linz became an important regional market town, and in 1240 it received city rights .
During the Protestant domination, the country house , one of the main attractions of the old town, was built. The Renaissance building is still the seat of the Upper Austrian provincial government.
During a big fire in 1800 some historical buildings were lost, nevertheless the old town of Linz remains one of the most beautiful parts of the inner city, with Renaissance bourgeois houses, the facades of which have been preserved, as well as many older houses with a Baroque face.
Today the old town of Linz is not just an architectural sight. A lively local scene has also established itself, which is particularly popular with young people and students in the evenings.
Outside the actual old town there are many shopping streets in the old town, such as the promenade opposite the Landhaus, Herrenstraße, Spittelwiese and Bischofstraße, where many second-hand bookshops have settled.
Also in the old town is the New Cathedral , built in neo-Gothic style, which is the largest church in Austria with a capacity of 20,000 worshipers .
