The Atelierhaus Salzamt Linz is a former salt office on the southern bank of the Danube and has been used by the city of Linz since 2009 to promote the international exchange of artists in the visual arts .

history

In 1456 the later governor Reinprecht V. von Walsee inherited the grass farm on the upper Danube land . Governor Wolfgang von Polheim had stables and boxes built in the grass courtyard for King Maximilian in 1504 .

After the introduction of the salt monopoly, a salt barn for Gmundner Salz was built in the Grashof in 1562 , and the construction of a second barn began as early as 1567. In 1619 the imperial salt chamber and the barn were rebuilt on the city wall, whereby the salt barn was again described as dilapidated in 1661. In 1706 it was decided to build a new salt chamber and salt barn, and then the buildings that exist today were built.

In 1911, the salt office on Obere Donaulände No. 15 was structurally separated from the Salzstadel at No. 17.

Based on the initiative of the artists Josef Fischnaller , Engelbert Kliemstein and others for a free art house in Linz in the 1960s, the house in which exhibitions and studios were offered was named Kliemsteinhaus for a project from 2002 .

For the Capital of Culture year 2009, the Salzamt was renovated by the City of Linz and expanded into small apartments and studios for visual artists.

building

The three-storey building of the imperial salt chamber, newly built in 1706, has numerous baroque features according to the time it was built. Corridors, exhibition hall and some other rooms have cross vaults . Where the outer walls build on the former city wall, they are in places over 2 meters thick.

Since the building is subject to monument protection, the renovation completed in 2009 placed emphasis on the best possible preservation of the original structure. The original stucco ceilings and belt wood floors have been preserved in many rooms . The beam construction of the roof structure was also adopted unchanged. The layout of the complex is similar to the lowercase letter "h". The total usable area is 1400 m². A basement was built in to accommodate the building services and sanitary facilities.

Studio house

In 2008 the City of Linz invested around four million euros in the purchase, renovation and adaptation of the building. Since July 2009 the Atelierhaus Salzamt has been a cultural institution of the city of Linz in a central location on the Danube. The Atelierhaus Salzamt is a place where young visual artists from home and abroad meet. A total of nine studios are available here. Four international scholarship holders will each be given a small residential unit and their own studio free of charge for a maximum period of two months. In addition, international guest artists receive a monthly grant to cover their living costs. Studios and apartments are also rented to the Province of Upper Austria , the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz and Ars Electronica . Four further studios without residential units will be given to local artists biennially and free of charge.

On the ground floor, next to the premises of the actual studio building, there is a restaurant that is run by an external tenant. In the summer, an enclosed courtyard with an arcade serves as a guest garden.

Exhibitions

In the exhibition space of the Salzamt, mostly thematic group exhibitions in the field of fine arts are shown on a monthly basis, without media restrictions.
