Eugenie Kain (born April 1, 1960 in Linz ; † January 8, 2010 there ) was an Austrian writer .

Life

Eugenie Kain was born in Linz in 1960 as the daughter of the writer Franz Kain . After attending school, she began studying German and theater studies at the University of Vienna. From 1984 to 1990, Kain worked for the daily newspaper Volksstimme and read regularly as the author of the Left Word at the annual Volksstimmefest . In 1991 their daughter Katharina was born. From 1995 to 1998 Kain wrote in the hillinger newspaper project , in 1996 the author worked on the conception of the Linz street newspaper "Kupfermuckn", and from 1999 to 2008 she contributed to radio FRO . In 2003, Kain ran a writing workshop for residents of the flood-affected community of Mitterkirchen and in 2005 a writing workshop for the homeless . Eugenie Kain published her texts on ORF , in free radios and in numerous magazines. On January 8, 2010, she died of cancer in her hometown.

Subject

In her works, Eugenie Kain thematized the actions of people in borderline situations and the problems of socially marginalized groups. In her writing she followed social and urban fault lines. Coming from a communist family, Eugenie Kain found her way into the KPÖ, of which she had been a member since 1983. Her political commitment also focused primarily on the cultural sector and the critical examination of social conditions, such as her contributions to "Café KPÖ", the left-wing magazine for Upper Austria that has been published since 2004. The narrator of the book Whispering Songs remembered that on the first Sunday in May her family never went on Mother's Day excursions like other families, but went to the Mauthausen concentration camp to take part in the memorial event for the victims of National Socialism .
