The Salzstadel Linz is a former salt barn of the neighboring former Imperial Salt Office on the southern bank of the Danube in Linz .

history

In 1562 the former grass farm was converted into a salt barn in order to be able to temporarily store the amount of salt that was transported along the Linzer Steig to the salt farm in Freistadt and on to Bohemia . The construction of a second barn began as early as 1567. New buildings and renovations took place in 1619 and 1706. In the 18th century, the one-story building was extended. In 1911, the building was structurally separated from the directly adjacent Imperial Salt Office. From 1927 to 1929 the interior wooden ceilings were demolished.

Salzstadel

The building is an elongated two-storey building with a gable roof with a hook-shaped courtyard wing. The facade facing the Danube is supported by the former medieval city wall from the first half of the 13th century and 15th / 16th century. Century and still show the remains of former keyhole slits . Despite changes with utility gates, the facade still shows the character of a salt barn. The small transverse windows in the courtyard also show the former use as a warehouse.
