Klamschlucht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Klamschlucht is the gorge of Klambachs largely on the border between the municipalities Klam and Baumgartenberg in the lower Mühlviertel in district Perg in Upper Austria .

Location, geology, flora, fauna, nature conservation

The approximately two kilometer long Klam Gorge begins below the Clam Castle in Klam and ends in the village of Au west of Saxen by the Hintermühle at the beginning of the Machland plain .

The bizarre rock formations with their crevices and caves were given names such as "Drachenloch", "Rabenstein" and "Steinerne Tür". The natural monument Leonstein was so popularly named because the rock formation is reminiscent of Pope Leo II because of the distinctive nose that can be found in the stone . Strindberg describes the rock formation in Inferno as a Turkish head with a turban.

In the Klamschlucht there are still remnants of the so-called gorge forest . The climate is humid and shady and provides lush vegetation. Sycamore maple , elm and ash as well as ground vegetation and other deciduous trees thrive . The eagle owl , dipper and kingfisher find enough food. The fish population consists primarily of brown trout . Otters can occasionally be seen. The Klamschlucht is repeatedly devastated by flood disasters.

history

The Klamschlucht is still partly part of the property that is connected to Clam Castle, which was first mentioned in 1149. The water power of the Klambach was used for a sawmill (Bergmayrmühle), a grain mill (Hintermühle, Strondlmühle) and a forge (hammer mill). A charcoal burner was also located there. Some legends have been handed down about the Klamschlucht (for example the "legend of the stone door", the legend of the fairy Clamlinde, the "Siegfriedsage").

In the 19th century August Strindberg processed his impressions of the Klamschlucht in literary terms and the waterfall in the Klamschlucht also inspired him as a painter . The picture "Maria in der Schlucht" by Ernst Graner , who is married to the hammer's daughter, shows the features of his wife and the sgraffito on the former hammer mill, today's small power station of Count von Klam, shows the hammer at work. In the 21st century, the regional crime novelist Ernst Reinhard Schöggl wrote crime novels, some of which are set in the Klamschlucht.

economy

The run -of- river power plant , built in 1923 by the Prime Minister, Count Heinrich Clam-Martinic , together with the power plant built by Georg Clam Martinic at the entrance to the gorge in 1963, supplies around 300 households in Klam and Saxen with energy. The count had always resisted the creation of a reservoir in the gorge in order to preserve its natural beauty.

In addition to the use of hydropower , the focus is on tourist use as the “Klamschlucht-Strindbergweg” circular hiking trail. The Donausteig long-distance hiking trail, newly created in 2010 , also leads through the Klam Gorge. A viewing platform, a fish viewing pool, a seating area, play equipment and a climbing wall were created. Both the municipality of Saxen and Klam belong to the LEADER region Strudengau . The only Strindberg Museum outside of Sweden is located in Saxen .
