Ernst Graner
Ernst Graner (born September 25, 1865 in Werdau , Saxony , † November 27, 1943 in Vienna ) was an Austrian watercolorist .
life and work
He studied at the Vienna Academy under Eduard von Lichtenfels and exhibited landscape paintings at exhibitions in Vienna since 1890.
Graner is considered one of the most important Viennese watercolorists of his time. His numerous watercolors show views with rich staffages from Vienna, especially the Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palace with exits by Emperor Franz Joseph . Some of the buildings shown no longer exist, such as the Vienna Rotunda , the Philipphof or the Vienna City Theater . In his early days, Graner also painted genre scenes.
Graner was married to Maria Kastler, the daughter of a hammer smith from Klam ( Klamschlucht ) and stayed there for a while. The portrait of Mary in the gorge bears the features of his wife. A sgraffito at the hammer mill in the Klamschlucht on the August Strindbergweg-Klamschlucht cultural hiking trail shows his father-in-law at work.
Afterlife
In 1961 the Granergasse in Vienna- Liesing (23rd district) was named after him.
Graner's works are also exhibited in the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna.
