Flößerkapelle (Au an der Donau)
The Flößerkapelle , also called Schifferkapelle or Auer Chapel , is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra and is located in the village of Au an der Donau in the market town of Naarn in the Machlande in Upper Austria .
Description and history
The first chapel in Au has its origins in relief panels washed up by the floods in 1682 . From 1684 pilgrimages developed quickly here. Later a cross column with the four relief panels was erected and the construction of a chapel began in 1712, which was completed in 1713.
It is possible that this chapel was set on fire and destroyed by cannons from the other bank of the Danube during the French Wars in 1809 . The rebuilt chapel fell victim to the floods of 1899.
In 1901 a neo-Gothic chapel with 36 seats was built by private individuals . It is a two- bay gable building with a choir and 3/8 end .
In 1929 the still unconsecrated Auer Chapel was to become a place of pilgrimage as a place of prayer “in honor of the tears of Mary” . There were votive objects acquired as statue, flags, candles, carpets and the chapel outside black gefärbelt. An electrically illuminated cross was placed on the tower. In 1935 the chapel was up for sale. The Naarn parish acquired it on December 16, 1935. The consecration took place on May 3, 1936. During the Second World War, the only bell in the chapel was brought to the parish church in Naarn .
The last renovation work took place in 1971, 1997 and 2013. Local associations endeavor to maintain and maintain it. A bell cast by the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck was purchased for the anniversary "300 years of the Flößerkapelle", blessed on November 27, 2011 and hung in the tower of the chapel.
The chapel contains statues of Saints Aloisius of Gonzaga and Saint Florian, and in the center of the altar is a metal painting of Mary with the Child . Saint Nicholas is on the left in front of the chancel. The Way of the Cross, made in 1901, comes from Josef Dirnberger .
