history

Manors, place names

The documentary mention of a Richerus de insula in 1209 is assigned to the village of Au, only with Ditricus de Aw in 1267 is the mention of Au clear. In 1312 a Conrad of Av is attested, in 1351 a Chunrad of Av, 1354 a Conrad of Av. In 1376 Hannes von Aw bought one half and in 1380 also the other half of Windhaag , which then remained in the Auer's possession until 1400. After the Auer died out at the beginning of the 15th century, the greater part of the arable land came to the Spielberg domain .

Market Au on the Danube

Au had market rights very early on. Among other things, the Archduke of Austria , King of Bohemia , Croatia and Hungary and later Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Ferdinand I confirmed the market freedom of Au on March 3, 1530, because the old document had been lost.

During the French War from 1800 to 1801 the Danube was a given and desired line of demarcation and the Mühlviertel was spared the enemy invasion, while Upper Austria south of the Danube was in the hands of the French. During the French War of 1805, 5,000 men pitched their camp on the meadows between Markt Au and Naarn. During the period from the beginning of November 1805 to March 6, 1806, the population was plagued and assaulted. During the French War in 1809, at Markte Au on the northern bank of the Danube, the Austrian and the southern bank of the Danube faced the French and Bavarian troops. On June 26, 1809, the Au market was set on fire with grenades and wool-mounted iron balls and almost all of it was cremated. Among other things, the old church including the cemetery, the Auer Spital and the pillory perished and 16 houses were badly damaged or destroyed. With this destruction, together with the subsequent floods of the Danube in 1819 and 1822 and the consequences of the Danube breakthrough in 1827 and the resulting impoverishment of the population, the Au market lost its economic importance.

Aist, Sebern and Oberwagram

The village of Aist is mentioned in 1075 together with Straß and Winkl. The village of Sebern (first mentioned in 1151) is an old Slavic settlement area. The Aist is said to have formed a lake in the area in question. In the village of Oberwagram, first mentioned in 1333, the bank of the Aist may have been earlier.

Market town of Au an der Donau (1850–1937)

In the area of the cadastral municipality, the political market municipality of Au an der Donau existed from 1850, when after the revolution of 1848/1849 in the Austrian Empire throughout the entire monarchy, until 1937 . It was merged with the local communities Baumgarten , Naarn and Ruprechtshofen to form the local community Naarn im Machlande with effect from January 1, 1938 .

Flood of wood on the Aist

The wood flood on the Aist was operated from 1801 to 1948. The 74 km drift route took in the headwaters of the Black Aist their exit where artificial storage ponds and drift channels have been created. Artificial ponds were in Lower Austria located Karl Stifter ponds (Höllauteich, Stiriglerteich, Kolmteich and Mucke pond) and in Upper Austria located Rosenhofer ponds (Large and small pond and Neuhofer glut).

49 weirs on the Trift route had to be passed, which belonged to 23  mill works , two hammer mills , four power plants , a sawmill , four cardboard factories , a kaolin plant and 14 meadow irrigation systems. In Au, at the end of the drift section, the main rake , the floodplain and the wood yard were located .

Sales and transport were initially carried out using assembled rafts , later also using tugs on the Danube or by rail on wagons from the nearby Mauthausen train station .

Already in the first half of the 19th century the house of the flood administration was built in Obersebern. In the 1930s, around 700 people were temporarily employed at the time of the wood flood. The wood flood was of great economic importance for the Au market. The flood administration provided financial support to important projects in the market community such as the construction of the concrete bridge over the Aist in 1927, the construction of the connecting road to Mauthausen, the Aist regulation, the establishment of the electrical light network and the establishment of the fire and water service.

Rafting port

The rafting system on the Danube gained in importance with the establishment of urban settlements. Wood from the forests along the Danube and its tributaries was needed to cover the wood requirements of Vienna or Budapest , for example . Before continuing their journey on the Danube, the Enns rafts were mostly converted into larger Danube rafts in Au an der Donau. The small rafts from the Enns and Salza collected in Au and only when about 20 small rafts of 25 solid cubic meters of wood had arrived did the raft construction for a large raft ("the Auer Donaufloß") begin. According to the international shipping police regulations of 1927, a raft on the route from Passau through Austria was not allowed to exceed 65 meters in length and 15 meters in width for safety reasons and because of the controllability. The rafts reached a draft of no more than 2 meters. The Budapest rafts were fitted with superstructures that offered space for 10 to 12 people. They cooked and slept in these huts.

Emergency money of the 1920s

At the beginning of the 1920s, during the global economic crisis , the market town of Au an der Donau issued emergency money like many others . The Auer houses Pühringer and Hickersberger could be seen on the 20 Heller note, a wood storage area on the Danube on the 30 Heller note and the main rake on the floodplain on the 50 Heller note. In addition to the standard texts, the reverse contained the official market emblem.

Monument protection

Ship train relief

In the area of the cadastral community of Au is the listed Haus Oberwagram 6, which was purchased in 1989 by the market community of Naarn. The building was adapted as a home and bears a ship train fresco from 1797.

Nikolauskapelle in Au

The raftsman's chapel, which was built by private individuals in 1900 and acquired by the Naarn parish in 1935, is also a listed building . The neo-Gothic chapel was last renovated in 1971 and 1997 and contains statues of St. Aloisius von Gonzaga and St. Florian, as well as a metal painting of Mary with the child in the center of the altar. St. Nicholas stands on the left in front of the chancel. It is a two-bay gable building with a choir and a 3/8 end. In 2011 the chapel received a bell.

A first chapel at the site in question has its origins in a relief plaque washed ashore by the floods in 1682, after which pilgrimages quickly developed. In 1713 a chapel was built, which was possibly shot on fire and destroyed by cannons from the other bank of the Danube in 1809. A rebuilt chapel then fell victim to the floods of 1899.

Economy, infrastructure

Volunteer firefighter

The forerunner of the fire brigade system was a company fire brigade to protect the facilities and the wood that was stored here and that came to Au in the course of the wood flooding on the Aist. The spray gun purchased by the flood administration was used several times after 1891 in fire operations by the Naarn volunteer fire brigade . Furthermore, a medical patrol was formed and shortly afterwards a water defense department .

In 1905, it was decided to found a fire-fighting facility as part of the Naarn volunteer fire brigade. Although the necessity of its own fire brigade for Au was emphasized several times, it was not until 1923 that the Au an der Donau volunteer fire and water brigade was founded, which was initially divided into the riser department, the syringe department and the rescue department. In 1924 the construction of a fire station was started, which was opened and inaugurated in 1925. In 1938 it was merged to form the Naarn community's volunteer fire department.

In 1946, the Au / Danube volunteer fire and water service was re-established. The equipment was gradually adapted to the requirements and in 1959 a new fire station was opened, which was thoroughly renovated from 1993 to 1998.

tourism
