Laab is a village in the cadastral municipality of Naarn in the market town of Naarn in Machlande in the Perg district in Upper Austria .

geography

The village with 147 inhabitants (according to the 2001 census) is located in the southeastern part of the cadastral municipality of Naarn. In addition to the village itself, the village also includes the scattered houses In der Au in the east, with the farms Hofmandl and Schedlbauer . Other place names besides Weiler in der Au in the village of Laab are: Weiler Windschnur and Weiler Haslau . It is located in the Upper Austrian spatial unit Machland .

To the north of Laab is the village of Pratztrum , to the west are Dirnwagram and Naarn , and to the south-east Laab borders on the villages of Neuhof and Baumgarten in the Baumgarten cadastral community. In the east, on the other hand, the Naarn lies the floodplains of the village of Tobra in the municipality of Perg.

The original settlement is characterized on the one hand by agriculture and on the other hand by the pilgrimage church Maria Laab . In the second half of the 20th century, additional single and multi-family houses were built, which was associated with a corresponding increase in the population.

The state road L 570 Machlandstrasse , which connects Mitterkirchen im Machland with Naarn im Machlande, runs through the village .

history

Pilgrimage Church of Maria Laab

The discovery of a very well-preserved slate ax ax in the local area of ​​Laab can be assigned to the Neolithic period (4500 to 1800 BC).

There are different opinions about the origin of the name Laab. While Salzner writes of a swampy deciduous forest with a sacrificial stone , Tamerl assumes an Old High German name ze Slaben for Slavic court. Jauker interprets Laab with river or swamp.

The name of the village Laab can therefore be traced back to the Old Slavic population who settled in this area parallel to the Bavarians in the 6th to 8th centuries. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1381 ( curia in der La ).

Shortly after the introduction of compulsory schooling in 1782, the Steyregg bailiff was asked to establish a local chaplaincy and a school in the village, including the employment of a schoolmaster, although correspondence continued until 1785, but the project never came to fruition.

In 1920 the village of Laab issued emergency money to use the then developing passion for collecting to generate additional income.

Towards the end of the war, a subcamp for refugee families had to be set up in the Gasthaus Lichtenberger in order to free the school in Naarn for school operations.
