The Alte Donau station on the Vienna underground line U1 is located in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt . It is named after the Old Danube , an old arm of the Danube, which has been a stagnant body of water since the Danube was regulated in the 19th century. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the area has gradually been developed as a leisure and recreational area.
The high-altitude station was opened on September 3, 1982 with the commissioning of the penultimate section of the U1 between the Praterstern and Kagran stations . The station has two side platforms, is located directly on the banks of the Old Danube and protrudes into the water on an artificially raised dam . To the east of the station there is an anchorage for recreational sailboats , to the west an allotment garden . Staircases and elevators lead from the center of the station to a reception building, which is located under the subway structure. There the exit leads directly to Arbeiterstrandbadstrasse.
It is possible to change to the bus line 20A in the direction of the New Danube operated by the Gschwindl transport company on behalf of Wiener Linien (individual routes to Floridsdorf station). During the Vienna bathing season (May - September) there is also a separate bathing service with line 20B, which only stops along the Old Danube (including the Angelibad stop , where regular 20A buses do not stop). In the immediate vicinity of the station are the Alte Donau national baths, the workers' beach, the ÖBB sports facility and numerous allotment gardens.
