Location and surroundings

It is located in the 6th Viennese district of Mariahilf , on the border with the 15th . District. Due to the course of the belt there, it is one of the few stations in the Vienna subway network with “curved” platforms. Gumpendorfer Straße , named in 1862 and reminiscent of the former suburb of Gumpendorf, is named after it . The station is dominated on the north side by the impressive neo-Gothic dome of the parish church Maria vom Siege, built between 1868 and 1875 according to plans by Friedrich von Schmidt .

The facilities extend along the Mariahilfer belt between the Gebrüder-Lang-Gasse and the Sechshauser Straße in the 15th district. The station building is entered from the east and west through the typical green-painted swing doors . Staircases lead from the reception hall to the platforms. The station has elevator systems including ramps to overcome the outer steps.

The exits lead to the outer and inner Mariahilfer Gürtel. There you can change to tram lines  6 in the direction of Zentralfriedhof and 18 in the direction of Schlachthausgasse or Stadthalle (both). The bus stop for bus line 57A in the direction of Anschützgasse or Burgring is located under the bridge south of the station building . The Gumpendorfer Strasse station is a focal point of the drug scene. Nearby are the Aidshilfe Wien house , the Arik-Brauer-Haus and the Raimundtheater , which is also called out in the station announcement on the train.

history

Steam light rail in left-hand traffic, around 1910

The station was built for the belt line of the Vienna steam light rail . In their early plans it was sometimes still referred to as Gumpendorf or Gumpendorfer Line , before it finally got the name that is still used today. Like the other light rail systems, the Gumpendorfer Straße station was designed by Otto Wagner on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna . The structural completion took place in July 1896, the commissioning on June 1, 1898. From 1925 the new Viennese electric tram served the station as a replacement , in 1989 the U6 line took over this function.

During the electrification of the Austrian Federal Railways after the city of Vienna took over the light rail lines, the Gumpendorfer Strasse junction was set up a little north of the Gumpendorfer Strasse station. From there, connecting tracks led to the Vienna tram network , which was used by the mixed-service line 18G from 1925 . There she switched to the tram network - coming from Heiligenstadt - and continued to the south and east train stations and back again from there. The changeover to right-hand traffic after the annexation of Austria in 1938, which was not carried out by the Stadtbahn, required modifications to the tram tracks in the Gumpendorfer Strasse area in order to be able to change sides. According to the timetable, this crossing was last used on February 19, 1945, after that only occasionally by construction trains. On August 2, 1965, the signal box that was necessary for the operation of the track connection was closed. Shortly thereafter, this facility was dismantled, only on the outer Mariahilfer Gürtel remained structural remains, which are now used as storage space.

Such a level crossing was also planned at the Hietzing tram station, but was never implemented. There was also a transition track at the Michelbeuern station, but according to the schedule it was only used for a reverse loop with its own station.

Between April 15, 1985 and October 7, 1989, the Gumpendorfer Strasse station was the southern terminus of the Gürtelstrecke, as the ramp leading to the Meidling Hauptstrasse station was broken off from the Otto Wagner Bridge over the Wien River and then to the new Längenfeldgasse station, which is located closer had to be rebuilt.

In 2006 and 2007 a general renovation of the building was carried out, which also took into account accessibility. The previously existing passage outside the station was closed and the kiosk in front was dismantled.
