The Nußdorfer Straße station is a station on the Vienna underground line U6 in the 9th district of Alsergrund on the border with the 18th district of Währing . The high station extends between the outer and inner Währinger belt at the level of Sobieskistraße in the 9th and Schrottenbachgasse in the 18th district. It is named after Nussdorfer Straße , which was named after the suburb of Nussdorf in 1862 .

history

The station was built for the belt line of the Vienna steam light rail . In their early plans, it was sometimes referred to as the Nussdorf Line , before it finally got the name that is still used today. The stop designed by Otto Wagner on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna is one of the best-preserved belt stations with the stations Gumpendorfer Straße, Josefstädter Straße, Alserstraße and Währinger Straße. The building was completed in August 1896 and opened on June 1, 1898. In 1918, like almost all stations of the steam light rail , it had to be taken out of service and reopened in 1925 as part of the Vienna Electric Light Rail . In addition to the pure light rail lines, the combined tram and light rail line 18G also served the station between 1925 and 1945 . After adaptation work for underground operations (among other things, the platforms at the southern end were extended by a few meters), the station has been served by the U6 since 1989. Like all belt stations in Otto Wagner style, the Nußdorfer Straße station is entered through green-lacquered swing door entrances on the east and west sides. From the reception hall, in which there is a mobile newspaper stand and a bakery, two stairs lead to the directional platforms. Electronic display boards in the reception hall provide information about the departure of the next two train sets.

The tram lines 37 in the direction of Hohe Warte and 38 in the direction of Grinzing stop a little further east inside the belt in the Nußdorfer Straße and in the direction of Schottentor outside the belt in the Döblinger Hauptstraße . It is also possible to change to bus lines 35A in the direction of Salmannsdorf and 37A. In the immediate vicinity of the station is the Israelitische Friedhof Währing , next to the Sankt Marxer Friedhof the only surviving burial place in Vienna from the time of the Josephine reforms . In addition, opposite the western exit is the depot of the belt depot. The Währinger Park can be reached via Schrottenbachgasse . A lively local scene has developed in the vicinity of the station since the late 1990s.

Originally, the Nussdorfer Straße station should have been a separation station , at which the connecting arch to the Danube Canal line should branch off. As a result of short-term rescheduling, however, this ultimately began at the operationally independent Nussdorfer Straße junction , which was located on the open route about 300 meters north of the station. Thus, Nussdorfer Straße remained just a stop , but the branch originally planned as a preliminary construction work is still recognizable today.
