The Museumsquartier station is a two-storey, underground station on the U2 line on the border between the 1st and 7th districts of Vienna. It has two side platforms and is located on the so-called two -way line , directly under Museum Square. It is named after the MuseumsQuartier . Exits lead to the surface via a small shopping arcade at the intersection of Mariahilfer Straße , Museumstraße, Babenbergerstraße and Getreidemarkt . The station has elevators and is therefore barrier-free. Important points in the immediate vicinity are the Museum Quarter, the Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street, the Art History Museum and the Natural History Museum .

history

The station was first opened in 1966 with the name Mariahilfer Straße as a sub-paving tram . This name still appears in the station, next to the Museum Quarter on the official subway maps . On August 30, 1980 the underground service began. On April 6, 1991 the station was renamed Babenbergerstrasse . In the years 2000–2001, the platforms were expanded for the operation of long trains. The shopping arcade was also renovated and redesigned in view of the opening of the Museum Quarter.

Expansion project "Line cross U2 / U5"

As part of the expansion project for the U2 / U5 line intersection, the U2 is to have a new south branch from 2027 and no longer use this station. Instead, the Museumsquartier station will be served by the new U5 . Since this underground line will run fully automatically, platform screen doors will be retrofitted as part of a two-year closure on the Schottentor - Karlsplatz route . After the closure has expired, only the U2 will initially serve the station, after its opening also the U5 and after the opening of the new south branch of the U2 only the U5.

Design

The Tyrolean sculptor and draftsman Rudi Wach created the cycle “Run of the Creatures” in 2001 especially for the station . The art already begins on the platform; this is intended to convey that the area around the station represents a focal point of cultural life in the city, as the museum quarter and the two courtyard museums can be reached from here. The 18 oversized pencil drawings on the platforms give shape to the human being. There are 10 drawings on platform 1 (towards Karlsplatz) and eight on platform 2 (towards Seestadt).

On platform 1 there is also the bronze relief "The Jubilee", also by Rudi Wach. The bronze sculptures “Guardian”, “Lebenskeim” and “Gate of the Hidden” were placed on the distribution floor by the same artist.
