The Pyrenean squill ( Scilla lilio-hyacinthus L. , Syn . : Oncostema lilio-hyacinthus (L.) Speta ) is a species of the genus of the squill ( Scilla ).

features

The Pyrenean squill is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 (40) centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The six to ten simple, ruler leaves are 15 to 30 inches long and 1 to 3 (4) inches wide. They are shiny, lanceolate and pointed. There are two to three stems .

In a dense, conical, racemose inflorescence , about five to 15 flowers stand together. The lower bracts are 1 to 2.5 inches long, egg-shaped and membranous. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The six equally shaped bracts are 9 to 12 millimeters long, obverse- shaped and bright blue, rarely white.

The flowering period is from April to June.

Occurrence

The natural range includes northern Spain as well as southern and central France. Here this plant species occurs in fresh beech forests at altitudes between 600 and 1600 meters.

Culture

This species is rarely used as an ornamental plant in shrub beds and groups of trees.
