The Peruvian squill ( Scilla peruviana , syn .: Oncostema peruviana (L.) Speta ) is a species of the genus of the squill ( Scilla ). The name is misleading as this species does not come from Peru but from the western Mediterranean. It comes from the fact that Carolus Clusius erroneously wrote in 1601 that it came from Peru.

features

The Peruvian squill is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The simple leaves are 40 to 60 centimeters long, 1 to 4 centimeters wide and usually ciliate on the edge.

40 to 100 flowers sit together in a wide, conical, racemose inflorescence . The lower bracts are 2 to 6 (8) inches long. The lower flower stalks are 3 to 5 centimeters long, up to 9 centimeters when the fruit is ripe. The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six deep blue-violet or white bracts are approximately 14 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide.

The flowering period extends from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, rarely 28.

Occurrence

The distribution area includes southwest Europe to Sardinia, Sicily and southern Italy as well as northwest Africa. This plant species occurs here in damp meadows.

The Peruvian squill is rarely in warmer areas as ornamental plant to find.
