Vegetative characteristics

The East Asian squill is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 40 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The simple leaves are 15 to 25 inches long and 0.4 to 0.7 inches wide and developed with the stem.

Generative characteristics

The racemose inflorescence is 20 to 80 flowered and arises next to the rosette of leaves. The bracts are 1 to 2 millimeters long. The six identical, spread out, pink bracts are 2 to 4 millimeters long. There are six stamens . A capsule fruit is formed.

The flowering period extends from August to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, 18, 26, 27, 34, 35, 36, 43, 51 or 68.

Occurrence

The natural range includes southern, central and northern China , Korea , Ussuri , Japan and Taiwan . There this type of plant grows on stony and sandy slopes, dunes and flood plains. In the south of the distribution area it can be found up to altitudes of 3000 meters.

Leaves and roots are edible. The onions are used medicinally.

This species is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders and shrub beds.
