The Napoleon Forest

The Napoleon Forest is a green area in the south of Vienna's 13th district, Hietzing . It is located between Jaunerstraße , Augasse , Anatourgasse and Felixgasse .

It is a remnant of the Leitenwald forest, which was still stagnant in the Lainzer Tiergarten around 1920 , which stretched from today's Anatourgasse in the east to today's Tiergarten wall in the west and to the Lainzerbach in the north. The Leitenwald was separated from the zoo for settlements on the zoo area in the early 1920s and most of it was cut down. (The area of the Leitenwald was then on the other side of Vienna's city limits in the municipality of Mauer bei Wien and was incorporated into the 13th district in 1938.)

The Napoleon Forest covers around 3.25 hectares. Until around 1954 it was a pure oak stand (around 60 trees: stalk and turkey); since then it has also been planted with other tree species, while the oaks (probably since Napoleon) are reaching their age limit. A brook used to flow through it, which is still reminiscent of wild rose bushes. Stag beetles and the longhorn beetle Cerambyx cerdo in particular were so common among animals that mark their location that they often flew into the surrounding houses. After the Second World War, the forest was partly parceled out for commercial purposes (including potato cultivation) until around 1953, and swampy areas were covered with rubble. There is a popular inn on the northwestern edge.

The name comes from the time of the Napoleonic wars , when the forest located here was cut down: The wood served as heating material for Napoléon Bonaparte when he resided in Schönbrunn Palace. Czeike names the wood requirements for Napoleon in connection with his stays in Vienna in November and December 1805; His stay in Vienna for more than five months in 1809 is also an option. It was later reforested.
