A dog toilet , in some places also a dog toilet , refers to special public facilities for dogs, where they can do their business in an orderly manner without polluting the environment with dog excrement.

construction

Basically, public dog toilets consist of the following components:

  • a large gravel bed filled with recycled chippings intended for the dumping of the manure
  • a tire or a similar object that the dog can mark while urinating, as a tree substitute, so to speak. In Vienna, old car tires (officially: " Pissreifen " [sic]) are available for this purpose.
  • a metal shovel to pick up the excrement or to level the gravel bed
  • a bucket to dispose of the excrement
  • a container with plastic bags for hygienic packaging of the excrement.

Sometimes there can be local variations, sometimes individual components are left out for reasons of cost or can differ greatly in type and quality. There are manufacturers who are trying to establish certain standards for dog toilets. For example, there are the components of plastic bag dispensers and manure buckets for dog toilets as a finished combination product.

Occurrence

Dog toilet in Gent (Belgium)

Dog toilets are a relatively recent invention and not yet well established. Nevertheless, there have been pilot projects for some time.

In the Margareten district of Vienna , twenty such facilities have been available across the board since May 2003. If this project proves successful, an expansion to the whole of Vienna is planned as the next expansion phase. This is particularly necessary because Vienna has a high dog population compared to the human population in a European comparison. The City of Vienna tries to counteract this burden with the distribution of dog waste bags (so-called "dog waste bags") and the expansion of dog zones. There are currently 143 dog zones across Vienna with a total of 941,932 m², and 2750 dog waste bag dispensers have been set up. The advertising subject of the marketing campaign to advertise the dog waste bags ( " Take a sack for my cuckoo " ) was awarded the slogan of the year in 2006.

In practically every residential area in the Netherlands, there are fenced-off rectangular areas that serve as dog toilets. The dog cleaning station in Switzerland is something similar .

maintenance

In Vienna, the dog toilets are jointly maintained by MA 42, Stadtgartenamt, and MA 48, waste management. However, maintenance does not mean the immediate cleaning of the dog toilets after use, this is the sole responsibility of the dog owner. In any case, various aids are available to make cleaning easier (see above).
