A dog lead or leash is a leash that for guiding dogs , rarely, other domestic animals is used. A dog leash connects a harness or a collar with a handle or a loop. A dog leash is used by the dog handler to guide the dog , and also to protect passers-by and other animals as well as the dog itself (e.g. in traffic) during daily exercise.

A dog leash can be made of leather (usually cowhide ) or many different other materials. Some dog leashes, the so-called roll-up or automatic leashes, also have a roll-up mechanism that can be used to give the dog more freedom of movement if necessary.

The oldest evidence of the use of dog leashes was found at the Shuwaymis and Jubbah sites in northwest Saudi Arabia. There were representations of hunting scenes from the 7th, maybe even 8th millennium BC. BC, with dogs walking on leashes.

Municipal leash compulsion

Note on leash compulsory in a green area

On public roads within built-up areas (including parks), dog regulations often make it mandatory to be on a leash. This is often indicated by signs in public recreational areas. Such signs often read: "Please keep dogs on a short leash!". It should be noted that the dog leash should be kept as short as possible when the leash can be rolled up. In many cities there are specially approved areas for dogs to run freely, mostly remote meadows outside of inhabited areas.

Special constructions

  • The Y-leash is a special type of dog leash. It enables two dogs to be guided with one hand at the same time.
  • Guide dogs for the blind require a special construction with a rigid handlebar that transmits every movement of the dog to the hand of the handler.
  • A moxon leash (also called retriever leash ) is a combination of leash and collar with hand loop, leash, collar with slide ring and stopper.
  • The release leash is also a leash and collar in one and is mainly used for hunting.
  • A roll dog leash (colloquially often " Flexi-Leine ", brand name of the inventor) is a very long leash that is wound up in a hand-held housing by means of a spring .
  • A lunging line is a very long line that is used, among other things, when lunging with dogs .
  • A tow line is also a very long, usually thin, line. The dog drags them dragging behind him. It is used to control the dog on the leash if necessary or to give signals to the dog.
