Johann Scherpe

Johann (Hans) Scherpe (born December 15, 1855 in Vienna ; died February 15, 1929 there ) was an Austrian sculptor . He is considered to be an artist of the younger generation on Ringstrasse and was primarily a sculptor for buildings and monuments.

Life

Johann Scherpe, son of the carpenter and furniture draftsman Karl Friedrich Scherpe, began training as an apprentice wood carver. He later became a student at the J. Cesar Modeling School. It was there that he met the sculptor Rudolf von Weyr and worked for him. In 1877 he began studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and was there from 1880 to 1885 in the special school for higher sculpture with Karl Kundmann . In 1890 he became a full member of the Vienna Fine Arts Cooperative . Initially, Scherpe mainly created portrait busts and architectural sculptures, later mainly monuments. He won several competitions and medals for the latter. In 1896 he received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin .

After his death, Scherpe was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 13 B).
