The Danube bank motorway A 22 is a motorway in Austria and part of the European roads E 49 and E 59 . It runs north of the Danube from the Kaisermühlen junction with the A 23 southeast bypass to Stockerau , where it joins the S 3 Weinviertel expressway at the junction with the Stockerau expressway S 5 .
history
The connection on the left of the Danube between Linz and Vienna, sometimes called Hauderer-Straße and later Donau Straße (B3) , attracted more and more traffic as it was expanded, which particularly affected the cities of Stockerau , Korneuburg and parts of Floridsdorf . The section between Stockerau-Nord and Korneuburg-Ost of today's autobahn was completed as the four-lane S 3 expressway between 1969 and 1971. On October 31, 1981, the six-lane extension from Korneuburg Ost to Floridsdorfer Brücke was opened. In 1989 the last section from the Reichsbrücke to the Kaisermühlen junction was opened to traffic.
On September 5, 1998, the Korneuburg-West junction was opened. In autumn 2007, the six-lane expansion from Korneuburg-Ost to Stockerau-Ost was completed.
With the opening of the Weinviertel expressway (S 3) in 2009, the Stockerau – Stockerau-Nord junction was added to the S 3.
Between 2007 and 2010, the previous Korneuburg-West junction was converted into the Korneuburg junction and then the Vienna outer ring expressway (S 1) was built. On January 31, 2010, it was opened to traffic. In the course of the S 1 there is now a new connection point Korneuburg-West.
In order to enable a better east-west connection, consideration is being given to extending the A 22 from the Kaisermühlen junction over the Danube to the Simmeringer Haide and connecting it to the A 4 east motorway by means of a motorway fork. However, no planning activities are currently taking place.

Kaisermühlen
At the Kaisermühlen junction there is a connection to the Südosttangente and Donaustadtstraße (B 3b) in the direction of Kagran . East of the junction, the A 22 joins Raffineriestraße, which leads to the Lobau oil port . The junction is built in the form of a roundabout into which most of the connecting ramps lead. The Kaisermühlen junction is located about one kilometer west of the junction .
Kaisermühlen tunnel
In the Kaisermühlen area, the A 22 is run as an underground route through the Kaisermühlen tunnel . The Reichsbrücke and Vienna International Center junctions there take you in the direction of Zentrum, Kagran and UNO-City.
Brigittenau Bridge
The junction at the Brigittenauer Brücke was originally designed as a Danube Park junction , as the northern motorway was supposed to begin here . There are only connecting ramps from the A 22 to the Brigittenauer Bridge in the direction of Brigittenau , but not to the Donauturmstraße . This can only be reached from the other bank of the Danube over the bridge. Until the introduction of the motorway vignette in 1997, the Brigittenauer Brücke was part of the A 22; today it is part of the road that is known as Klosterneuburger Straße in traffic planning.
Floridsdorf Bridge
After the green bridge under the Islamic Center and the underpass of the northern railway , the A 22 reaches the connection to the Floridsdorfer bridge , where all the connecting ramps are two-lane. Here you can take Floridsdorfer Straße (B 226) in the direction of Brigittenau and Floridsdorf and the only public car park on the Danube Island . The Florido Tower is also in the immediate vicinity .
North bridge
The Floridsdorf junction connects the A 22 with its north bridge access road . This was part of the Donaukanalstraße (B 227) until 2002 and was added to the A 22 by the Federal Road Transmission Act. The feeder takes you out of town to Brünner Straße (B 7) and inward of town in the direction of Gürtel or Klosterneuburg . The junction lacks a turning option: Coming from Stockerau, you cannot drive onto the north bridge in the direction of Brünner Straße.
Strebersdorf
After the green bridges Jedlesee 1 and 2, the Donauuferautobahn reaches the Strebersdorf junction , which is partly in Lower Austria . The junction is designed as a junction in the shape of a pear , as the north edge expressway should flow here . Today it is used, among other things, to develop the Strebersdorf industrial area.
Korneuburg
Originally Korneuburg was only connected to the A22 via a junction (today Korneuburg Ost).
The second junction (Korneuburg West) was opened in 1998 at the same time as the adjacent Viennese Nordostrandstrasse . Since 2007, the Korneuburg junction has been converted here, as the Vienna Outer Ring Schnellstraße (S 1) has been connected to the A 22 since January 31, 2010. The knot is designed in the shape of a trumpet , where the connection from Stockerau to the S 1 leads via the indirect ramp. The ramps from the S 1 to the A 22 in the direction of Vienna are two-lane.
Local politicians have repeatedly called for the construction of an additional junction "Korneuburg Mitte" to relieve the city center.
Stockerau
The Stockerau junction is located after the Stockerau Ost and Mitte junction. Here the Stockerauer Schnellstraße (S 5) branches off in the direction of Krems and the A 22 joins the Weinviertel Schnellstraße (S 3 / E 59 ). One kilometer afterwards you will find the junction Stockerau Nord on the S 3, where you can exit to Horner Straße (B 4 / E 49 ), the most important connection to the Waldviertel . The Stockerau junction is also designed in the shape of a trumpet, the indirect ramp follows the connection from the S 5 towards Stockerau-Nord.
Others
The A 22 is the first autobahn in Austria where the speed in the area of the Kaisermühlen tunnel is continuously monitored by means of section control . Commissioning took place in spring 2003.
The Donauuferautobahn is part of the so-called regional ring around Vienna.
