The Kaisermühlen tunnel is a motorway tunnel in Vienna and part of the Danube bank motorway A22. With a length of 2,150 meters, it is the longest road tunnel in Vienna and with a daily vehicle frequency of up to 100,000 vehicles, it is the most heavily traveled tunnel in Austria. It is designed as an underground route and passes under the Danube City , Reichsbrücke and residential complexes in the Kaisermühlen district .

General

The Vienna International Center junction is located at the west portal of the tunnel, the Reichsbrücke junction in the tunnel and the Kaisermühlen junction at the east portal. The passage through the Kaisermühlen tunnel usually takes around two minutes. The tunnel has two structurally separate tubes with three lanes each and a hard shoulder. As is customary on city highways in Vienna, a speed limit of 80 km / h for passenger cars and 60 km / h for trucks over 7.5 tons applies in the tunnel .

Section Control

Section control for speed monitoring was introduced in the Kaisermühlen tunnel on September 1, 2003 as the first stretch of road in Austria . The road operator ASFINAG sees the success confirmed by the fact that no more serious accidents have happened in the coming years and that the speed will practically not be exceeded.
