The Van Swieten barracks is a barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces in Vienna in the 21st district of Vienna (Floridsdorf) .

It was named after Maria Theresa's personal physician and founder of the so-called Older Vienna Medical School , Gerard van Swieten .

Today the Van Swieten barracks houses the military medical center of the Austrian Armed Forces. Soldiers of the armed forces who want to take part in operations within the framework of the United Nations peacekeeping forces must undergo a selection process at the Van Swieten barracks or in the Army Personnel Office in Linz .

history

Between 1939 and 1940, the German Wehrmacht built an artillery barracks on Brünner Strasse, the Artilleriekaserne Brünner Strasse , in which air defense units were also stationed during the course of the Second World War . Towards the end of the war, the barracks were used as a makeshift military hospital . During the occupation, the Red Army used these barracks as a military hospital and a military hospital.

After the barracks were taken over by the Austrian Armed Forces, planning work began in 1957 for a modern military hospital with a capacity of 242 beds. However, this capacity was reduced to 177 beds by a decision by the Federal Minister for National Defense Ferdinand Graf on May 5, 1960.

In 1958 the construction of the farm buildings began and between April 1960 and December 1964 work was carried out on the actual hospital wing.

The hospital wing was divided into seven buildings, which have an underground connection through the cellars for the transport of patients and materials.

This military hospital , known as the Heeresspital , began operations in the Van Swieten barracks on June 1, 1965, as it also performs supraregional tasks for the armed forces . From 1987 to 2003 Walter Dorner was medical director of the Army Hospital, most recently with the rank of major general .
