Walter Dorner

Walter Dorner (born June 1, 1942 in Neunkirchen , Lower Austria ; † July 10, 2017 ) was an Austrian surgeon . From 1999 to 2012 he was President of the Vienna Medical Association and from 2007 to 2012 President of the Austrian Medical Association . As the medical director of the Army Hospital in Vienna- Stammersdorf from 1987 to 2003, he most recently had the rank of major general .

life and career

Walter Dorner attended high school in Mattersburg , where he graduated in 1960 . He then studied medicine at the University of Vienna . Since 1964 he was a member of the Catholic student association KHV Babenberg Vienna in the ÖCV . In 1969 he received his doctorate in medicine. He completed his training as a specialist in surgery at the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital , where he initially worked as an assistant doctor and later as a senior physician. In 1976 he opened a practice in Vienna- Alsergrund . In 1979 he moved to the army hospital housed in the Van Swieten barracks , where he was medical director from 1987 to 2003 and was promoted to major general of the armed forces in 2003 .

In 1981 he was elected to the full assembly of the Medical Association for Vienna, where he acted as chairman of the specialist physicians section from 1985 to 1996 and was vice-president from 1996 to 1999. On June 7, 1999, Dorner succeeded the late Michael Neumann as President of the Vienna Medical Association. He was Vice President of the Austrian Medical Association from 1999 to 2007, and in June 2007 he was elected President of the Austrian Medical Association. He held this position until 2012.

In 2013 he became a member of the University Council of the Medical University of Vienna , where he was active until the end. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Medical Anthropology and Bioethics (IMABO).

Dorner died of in 2017 at the age of 75 years suffering from cancer .
