The hospital was founded by the Sisters of the Divine Savior . According to the plans of the architect Bruno Buchwieser senior , the building was constructed from 1934 to 1935 for 100 beds. The inauguration took place on October 30, 1935 by Cardinal Theodor Innitzer . From 1961 to 1962 an extension with a ballroom and in-house kitchen and a new chapel were built according to plans by architect Walter Wanek. In the large asylum chapel on the first floor there are wooden figures by Josef Rifesser and a mosaic Stations of the Cross by Ernst Bauernfeind .

The institution's operation began with an internal, surgical and radiological department, two operating theaters and an outpatient clinic; Wilhelm Stöhr was in charge. In 1938, 2668 patients were treated. On August 26, 1939, the hospital was converted into "Reserve Hospital VIIIb" and the number of beds increased to 300 as a result. After the Second World War it was given back to the congregation, which until 1974 ran it exclusively with spiritual sisters.

In 1958 a department for gynecology and obstetrics was added, in 1977 the departments for anesthesia, intensive care and urology. In 1991 a physical institute followed and in 1992 the St. Raphael palliative ward, which was the first in Austria. The neurology department was opened in 2006, including a stroke unit and phase B neuro-rehabilitation beds. In 2007 the hospital was recognized as a “breastfeeding-friendly hospital”. The hospital is the teaching hospital of the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Applied Sciences for health professions. In addition, the hospital has been awarded the pCC quality certificate including KTQ .

The hospital specializes in vascular medicine and acute medicine for the elderly. The needs of this growing target group are met with comprehensive supply concepts. The aim is to keep patients healthy for as long as possible, even in old age. There are contracts with all health insurers (with the exception of ambulances).
