Josef Rifesser , also Joseph Rifesser , called Peppi Rifesser (born August 23, 1921 in Ortisei in Val Gardena , South Tyrol ) is an Italian wood carver and sculptor from Tyrol. He lives and works in Ortisei.

Rifesser comes from a traditional family of wood carvers. His grandfather of the same name, Josef Rifesser (1851-1919), for example, created the neo-Gothic furnishings of the Nikolaus Church in Konradsheim , the high altar of the Church of St. Jakob in Freising (1913), the side altars of the Christ the King Cathedral (Panevėžys) and the Marien Altar in the parish church "To the Holy Family" in Vienna- Ottakring.

Peppi Rifesser attended the art school in Ortisei and specialized in Madonnas in the Gothic style. Using methods specially developed by him, he was able to “antiquate” wooden figures: he and the then young Luis Trenker obtained centuries-old beams from wooden sticks, “Pepi” carved and “Luis” and his son Florian helped the ravages of time by they drilled holes in the wood or shot at it with shot to simulate woodworms . They grilled the figures with the soldering iron as if they had been standing in the heat of candles, they dug them into the earth or placed them in the rain to apply the necessary patina.

The "Rifesser Scandal"

In December 1958, Peppi Rifesser suddenly became famous: by chance he learned that a Madonna with child and grapes made by him was now to be auctioned in the famous Dorotheum auction house as a Madonna from France from the 14th century . Another work, A Foolish Virgin , had already been auctioned. He immediately informed the auction house that the wooden figures actually come from him, but at first no one believed him; three experts had assessed the sculptures as genuinely Gothic from Burgundy, around 1380 . Only when he brought a second Madonna made by him did the experts withdraw their reports. This sensation earned him a lot of press and television coverage, as well as fame. The fraudulent consignor, however, who had bought the statue cheaply, was convicted.
