The Carson National Forest is a northern New Mexico situated National Forest . The forest area covers an area of 5,632 km² and was named after Kit Carson .
With a height of 4,011 m, Wheeler Peak is New Mexico's highest mountain in the National Forest area. Like all national forests, it is federally owned and is used intensively for forestry purposes.
There are various leisure and recreational offers within the area. In addition to several campsites, the forest offers many opportunities for fishing and hunting. Several ski areas can be used in winter.
Flora and fauna
Due to the varied landscape, which consists of forests, meadows, mountain lakes and rivers up to the alpine tundra, the area is home to numerous plants and animal species. In addition to spruce and fir trees, there is also the American quivering aspen , which makes for an impressive play of colors, especially in autumn.
Native animal species include black bears , mule deer and turkeys .
Protected areas within the forest
The National Forest includes six total reserves that are designated as Wilderness Area :
- Chama River Canyon Wilderness (located mostly in the Santa Fe National Forest )
- Columbine-Hondo Wilderness
- Cruces Basin Wilderness
- Latir Peak Wilderness
- Pecos Wilderness (mostly in the Santa Fe National Forest)
- Wheeler Peak Wilderness
history
Originally the area was inhabited by Anasazi . At this time historical legacies can be found in various places. Excavations are still being carried out at the Pot Creek Cultural Site .
On July 1, 1908, the Carson National Forest was established by merging the Taos National Forest with parts of the Jemez National Forest .
