The Santa Fe National Forest is a 6,800.6 km² national forest located in New Mexico . It is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area and is administered from Santa Fe by the US Forest Service .
history
The reserve was established on July 1, 1915 by merging the Jemez National Forest with the Santa Fe and Pecos National Forest. In addition, the Valles Caldera National Preserve was created. The ranger districts established at that time (Coyote Ranger District, Cuba Ranger District, Española Ranger District, Jemez Ranger District, Pecos and Las Vegas Ranger District) still exist today.
In 1916 the Bandelier National Monument was defined as a separate protected area and has not been part of the actual National Forest since then.
With the Las Conchas Fire in 2011 and the Thompson Ridge Fire in 2013, two major forest fires occurred in quick succession that affected the area of the National Forest.
use
The protection goal of the protected area is primarily aimed at the sustainable use of the ecosystem. Thus, the National Forest is used for agriculture and forestry as well as a recreational area. The economic use takes place according to the National Forest Management Act (NFMA) and is planned and implemented by the United States Forest Service. The recreational and leisure offer includes, among other things, opportunities for hunting, hiking or cycling.
