Performance medicine and military ergonomics

The Institute for Performance Medicine and Defense Ergonomics was founded in 2006 at the Heeresspital in Vienna.

Performance medicine primarily deals with the current status and the improvement of a person's physical performance.

In the case of the Austrian Armed Forces (ÖBH) , the load patterns of military requirements are specifically recorded using measurements and the resulting physical requirement profiles are created. This is done in order to optimize the selection process and application-oriented training. Methods of sports medicine , occupational physiology , sports science and physiotherapy are used for this purpose.

Further tasks of performance medicine consist in the care of athletes of the Austrian Armed Forces and in the performance of preventive medical tasks in relation to fitness and health-oriented lifestyle .

The military ergonomics is concerned with the improvement of the interface soldier - equipment - equipment. This area, which can only be seen in a rudimentary way at the moment , should actually better be called Medical Defense Ergonomics at the Heeresspital .

An interdisciplinary research group has existed since 1991 that deals with the above-mentioned subject areas and stress research .

IT-qualified graduates of a technical college and sports scientists have the opportunity to do their basic military service at this institute.
