The Novosedly – Zellerndorf railway is a standard-gauge branch line in the Weinviertel . It leads from Novosedly via Laa an der Thaya to Zellerndorf . The Neusiedl-Dürnholz-Laa an der Thaya-Zellerndorf route was part of the main railway network of the Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn and was opened on December 8, 1873.
history
Construction work on the line began in February 1873 and was completed after a few months, so that it was opened on December 8, 1873. Originally, the route was intended as a strategic transit route, which is why it partly only led past the locations. Another reason for the remote location of the stations was that the wagons , who provided the freight traffic from the station to the surrounding villages with ox-drawn carts , had generally spoken out against the construction of the railway. The kilometrage in Novosedly did not begin with 0.0, but with 117.20, as the KFNB kilometered all main routes from Vienna-North. In terms of engineering structures, there were only smaller wooden bridges between Novosedly and Laa, as well as the bridge over the route of the StEG , today's Laaer Ostbahn. The Wildendürnbach and Rothenseehof loading stations each had a loading platform, a waiting hall and a guard house. In addition, cover signals were set up in Rothenseehof. At the beginning the kk priv. Lundenburg-Grußbacher Bahn owned the concession for the route, which was sold to the KFNB on April 15, 1876 due to financial problems .
On October 4, 1930, operations between Novosedly and Wildendürnbach were discontinued, and the tracks were removed up to the distance of 120.73 kilometers (around 400 meters from the state border). The reason for this was the low volume of traffic with two mixed trains per day. After that, only one pair of freight trains operated in the Laa an der Thaya – Wildendürnbach section with passenger transport in the afternoon. In April 1945 the bridge over the former StEG route was destroyed, so that no traffic to Wildendürnbach was possible. Only after the construction of the 770-meter-long Russian loop from Laa an der Thaya station to kilometer 131.29 in 1945 and 1946 was it possible to resume traffic. However, after that there was no longer any passenger traffic on this section, and freight traffic was limited to demand traffic at harvest time.
On May 28, 1988, passenger traffic between Laa an der Thaya city and Zellerndorf was stopped. The tracks between Wildendürnbach and Laa Stadt, including the connecting track to the Laa an der Thaya train station, were completely removed.
Until December 2006, railcars of the 5047 series were still running in the 2.2 km section from Laa an der Thaya to Laa an der Thaya Stadt . The only pair of passenger trains still remaining on this section has since been used as a rail replacement service by bus, because the route from Mistelbach to Laa an der Thaya has been fully electrified and no diesel multiple units are stationed in Laa for the short section to Laa an der Thaya Stadt becomes.
The section from Laa to the Pernhofen-Wulzeshofen train station is still used for freight transport today . The main customer is the Jungbunzlauer glucose plant in Pernhofen. Freight traffic does not use the route that continues as planned, but is still available as a diversion route if necessary. It was renovated in 2005 and has been class D4 since then.
Reuse
At times there was the idea of opening the route to passenger trains with bicycles. The concept of the " phylloxera express " should be adopted. Renovation work would not be necessary on a large scale as the rails are still in good condition.
On March 26, 2017, an article about the Pulkautalbahn was published in the Niederösterreichische Bezirksbl Blätter (Hollabrunn district), which suggests a sensible use of the route by means of tram sets (so-called Pulkautaltram).
On November 17, 2018, four sets of 4020 and 4746 series as well as 13 double-decker cars were transferred via the Pulkautalbahn from Laa / Thaya to Zellerndorf. The reason was the line interruption on the Laaer Ostbahn due to a freight train derailment on November 8, 2018, which locked the vehicles.
