origin

Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm's father was the Steinau pastor Friedrich Grimm the Younger (1707–1777), her mother Christine Elisabeth, b. Heilmann (1715-1754). Juliane Grimm was the oldest and childless sister of the father of the Brothers Grimm , Philipp Wilhelm Grimm (1751–1796). She widowed in 1785.

Education of the Brothers Grimm in Hanau (1785–1791)

Widowed and childless herself, she had a not inconsiderable influence on the upbringing and development of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. She lived in the immediate vicinity of the Grimm family in Fahrgasse in Hanauer Neustadt. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm stayed with her every day in their childhood years. The Brothers Grimm were very attached to their aunt, whom they affectionately called "Aunt Schlemmer". Jacob Grimm later reported that during this time he was more attached to his aunt than to his father and mother.

She gave her first systematic lessons in reading and writing to the five-year-olds and possessed absolute authority. A silhouette from the Hanau era gives her profile with an energetic chin and long nose.

Jacob Grimm was even more important to her than Wilhelm Grimm. She continuously taught him the Abc. For this purpose she had an ivory-colored pointing stick made from an old fan, which was placed in the reading book as a marker after a successful lesson.

She also introduced the two brothers to religion by telling them biblical stories. With Jacob Grimm she also went through the little catechism, a Christian doctrine in question and answer form.

In her role as an educator, she lovingly cared for the spiritual well-being of the Brothers Grimm and thus promoted their intellectual abilities from their earliest youth. It was through the aunt's stories that the brothers came into contact with German folk tales for the first time. The love for education that Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm had awakened in the two young Brothers Grimm lasted her whole life.

Education of the Brothers Grimm in Steinau (1791–1796)

This upbringing and cultural education by Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm initially continued until 1791, until the father, Philipp Wilhelm Grimm, was appointed bailiff of the Hanau-Münzenberg offices in Schlüchtern and Steinau , which resulted in the family moving to Steinau an der Strasse in the local office resulted in.

In 1791, a few weeks after the Grimm family moved to Steinau, Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm sold her house in Hanau and also moved into the office of her brother's family in Steinau. In the social family association of the Grimm family, she continued to take on the role of private tutor and educator for the Brothers Grimm, alongside the city councilor Johann Georg Zinkhahn.

During the Steinauer period, Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm gave the brothers mainly lessons in religion. On the basis of the study of the catechism that had already begun in the Hanau period, she continued to read the Bible intensively with the brothers. Jacob Grimm later wrote that he “... by reading Huebner's biblical history and by frequently reading aloud from the Bible with his aunt” had acquired more religion than by teaching with Johann Georg Zinkhahn.

Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm also took care of the cultivation of the field and the maintenance of the garden in Steinau. After the death of Philipp Wilhelm Grimm in January 1796, the Grimm family had to leave the office in Steinau and move to the Huttische Spital. During this time, the "Aunt Schlemmer" supported the Grimm family financially and was able to alleviate the social decline of the family associated with the death of Philipp Wilhelm Grimm.

Juliane Charlotte Friederike Grimm died in December 1796. For Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the death of their aunt meant a severe blow of fate and a profound turning point in their lives.

meaning

For a long time, historical- biographical research concentrated mostly on recording, considering and evaluating the historical context and the factual life story of the people it “examined” , mostly important personalities. In the meantime, she is increasingly taking the family, social and intellectual environment into account. The family networks and the lifestyles of immediate reference persons as well as of "companions" (Völter et al.), Such as B. more distant relatives, teachers, sponsors and patrons, meanwhile a far greater importance than previously acknowledged for the personal development of the research subjects.

Among other things, research developments in sociology , in which the areas of biography research and life course sociology deal with it, have contributed to this.

In the meantime, Grimm research attaches great importance to the milieu-specific and family environment of the Brothers Grimm. So z. For example, the correspondence between Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and their older relatives (mother, grandfather Zimmer, aunt Zimmer, father, aunt Schlemmer) has been compiled, edited and published by the Grimm Correspondence Office at Berlin's Humboldt University since 1986 .

This extensive correspondence covers the years 1787 to 1813, during which the Grimm brothers experienced their decisive influence.
