Czech border crossings to neighboring countries

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EU border sign of the Czech Republic

Between 1993 and 2007, the Czech Republic maintained border crossings to the neighboring countries of Germany , Austria , Poland and Slovakia . The Czech Republic has been part of the Schengen area since December 21, 2007 and is not located on any external EU border , so that today there are no longer any border crossings at the state borders.

Overview

As the successor state to Czechoslovakia , the Czech Republic took over the border crossings to Germany, Austria and Poland on January 1, 1993. The border crossings to Slovakia were newly built. Since joining the EU on May 1, 2004, the Czech Republic has only been surrounded by other EU member states. Due to the integration into the European internal market and the customs union , no more customs controls have been carried out at the border crossings since joining the EU. Due to the transfer of the Schengen Agreement into the legal framework of the EU in 1999 by a protocol to the Treaty of Amsterdam , the Czech Republic's accession to the EU also meant the adoption of the Schengen acquis . The legal regulations were subject to a transition period until December 21, 2007, the expiry of which meant the abolition of border controls at state borders and the abolition of border crossings. At airports, border controls for flights within the Schengen area were abolished on March 30, 2008.

The border lengths to the neighboring countries:

  • Poland - 762 km
  • Slovakia - 252 km
  • Austria - 466 km
  • Germany 810 km

The Interior Ministry publishes the list of border crossings. The currently valid regulation is the notice of the Ministry of the Interior No. 373/2008 Sb., With which the list of border crossings in the event of a temporary reintroduction of border protection at the European internal borders is announced.

The EU Member States also send a list of the border crossing points to the European Commission, which publishes it in the Official Journal of the European Union .

Germany

Road crossings

Before the Second World War there was a large number of road connections between today's Czech territory and Germany, which, with a few exceptions, were closed in 1945. Until 1967 only the Vojtanov – Schönberg, Cínovec – Zinnwald and Hřensko – Schmilka crossings existed to the territory of the GDR. After the introduction of visa-free travel in 1972, further border crossings were set up.
